It’s Beginning To Feel A LOT Like Christmas!!

If you’re anything like me, you can sometimes be over-whelmed by the gluttony of holiday-themed entertainment that’s available this time of the year. It’s so bad that after Christmas shopping this past weekend, if I never hear “that” Mariah Carey song again for the rest of my life it still might be too soon.

But hey, that doesn’t mean I’m a Grinch around the holidays. There are always some great programs available that my family love to watch on an annual basis. And now, as my Christmas gift to you, I want to give you a chance to win SIX MONTHS of FREE NETFLIX (details below) while also providing you with one of my favourite Christmas recipes, along with some of my personal favourite holiday-centric programs that are currently available on Netflix.

First off…I thought I’d share a great recipe that my awesome wife makes for the family around the holidays: chocolate-peanut butter fudge! Total prep time is just over an hour and it’s a SUPER easy recipe that anyone can make! I’ve created a separate post that has all of the details. Trust me…you’ll thank me when it’s all said and done (and your family will, too!!).

Secondly, there are some great titles on Netflix that my family will watch that I’d like to recommend for your family (if you haven’t watched them already)…

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

GrinchI fully realize that there is a large group of Dr. Seuss fans who prefer the original cartoon classic over the Jim Carrey remake. I gotta say, though…I absolutely love this version! I think the acting is kitchy and fun, the make-up is incredibly faithful to the book, and the genius of Jim Carrey cannot be denied. This is one of the few movies of his career that fully demonstrate just how incredibly original and entertaining he can be (when he wants).

Jingle All The Way

Jingle-All-the-WayIt’s a Christmas movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger…how can you go wrong? What happens when a desperate dad has to match wits with a sleazy Santa, a stressed-out mailman, and a horde of parents just so he can procure the hottest new toy around on Christmas Eve? Well…you get a pretty entertaining holiday movie!

Arthur Christmas

Arthur ChristmasTo me, this is one of the more under-rated animated films that revolve around the big man in red. This 2011 film is a story about how Santa Claus must entrust his son, Arthur, to carry out an ultra-important Christmas mission. It basically gives an updated look at what Santa must probably have to do in order to REALLY travel around the world delivering toys in one night, and I know my son loved it when he watched it the first time.

Friends

FriendsMy wife and I have already watched all ten seasons on a two-month marathon session (seriously), but the one holiday episode I remember the most is from Season 7, Episode 10…titled “The One With The Holiday Armadillo”. The great thing about Netflix is that you can search through all ten seasons to find that one episode you’re looking for. It’s great having that convenience.

These are my holiday favourites…do you have any that are on Netflix? Sound off in the comment section below or on social media…I’m certainly open to finding a new favourite for the family to enjoy!

Christmas Chocolate-Peanut Butter Fudge!

I thought I’d share a great recipe that my awesome wife makes for the family around the holidays: Chocolate-Peanut Butter Fudge! Total prep time is around an hour and it’s a SUPER easy recipe that anyone can make! Trust me…you’ll thank me when it’s all said and done (and your family will, too!!).

To start off, here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • Unsalted butter, softened, for brushing
  • 1 14 -ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups bittersweet chocolate chips
  • 2 pinches salt
  • 2 cups peanut butter chips

Alright…here are the directions!

Simply line an 8-inch-square baking pan with foil (make sure you press it into the corners and up the sides). Leave an overhang on 2 sides, though. Then brush the foil with butter.

Combine 3/4 cup condensed milk, the chocolate chips, and a pinch of salt into a medium saucepan.

Combine the remaining condensed milk, the peanut butter chips, and a pinch of salt in a separate saucepan.

Now put both pans over low heat and cook, stirring occasionally until the chips are all melted and smooth.

Spoon the chocolate mixture into the prepared pan, leaving spaces between the spoonfuls. Spoon the peanut butter mixture into the gaps. Brush an 8-inch square of parchment paper with butter and lay it directly on top of the fudge. You should press to flatten evenly and fill any gaps.

Refrigerate until firm, about 45 minutes. Lift the foil to remove the fudge from the pan and cut into 1-inch squares.

SIT BACK AND ENJOY!!

CLIF Zbars

This is a sponsored post.

clifkid_legoAt the beginning of the summer, I was contacted by a company representing CLIF Bars to see if I would be interested in trying their new CLIF Zbars. I wasn’t really interested at first because those bars aren’t really my cup of tea. However, I was told these new bars were CLIF’s first kid-friendly Canadian organic snack that were crafted specifically for kids.

But what, exactly, IS a “Zbar”? Well, the CLIF website describes them as being “an organic baked whole grain snack made with a nutritious blend of carbohydrates, fiber, protein, and fat to maintain kids’ energy…so kids can keep zipping and zooming along.”

Well heck, my two stepdaughters are ALL ABOUT healthy snacks (thank goodness they’ve learned that trait from their mother), so I asked them if they would be interested in trying the bars. They said “sure” and so a couple of weeks later I received a package in the mail.

CLIF Zbars

The package was actually a “backpack” of sorts, which included a number of items including some binoculars, a whistle, and a compass. Where my stepdaughters are big-time fans of the outdoors, this seemed like a great fit.

Obviously, at the end of the day was the question of whether or not they enjoyed the bars themselves. So without any coaching at all, this is what Kiddo and Lil’ Mo had to say about the three different types of CLIF Zbars that they tried:

Chocolate Chip – Described as having “all the thick, chewy, goodness of a chocolate chip cookie – gone nutritious!”

Clif chocolate chip barKiddo (12 years old): “The chocolate chip cookie was good, but not my favourite one. It was still delicious and actually reminded me of chocolate chip cookies.”

Lil’ Mo (10 years old): “I found this to be pretty good. I really liked the taste of it.”

Chocolate Brownie – Described as “a brownie treat that is proof kids can have a nutritious dessert and eat it, too.”

Clif brownie barKiddo (12 years old): “1000 out of 100!! It was the best one. I loved it so much because it really tasted like a brownie. It was really chocolaty and really “brownie-y” and tasted like a dessert that came right out of the oven, but was cold…in the best way possible.”

Lil’ Mo (10 years old): “This was my favourite one. It was really good and I really liked it. It reminded me of chocolate fudge and brownies.”

Iced Oatmeal – Described as being “a delicious and nutritious blend of organic whole grain oats with a touch of cinnamon and vanilla.”

Clif iced oatmeal barKiddo (12 years old): “This one was my least favourite. It was really good, however the icing was unnecessary. I enjoyed it more when I could only taste the oatmeal part of it. If it was just an oatmeal cookie, it would have tasted better.”

Lil’ Mo (10 years old): “This wasn’t my favourite one, but it was pretty good. I enjoyed the white chocolate chunks in there.”

All three bars are Canada Organic, have vitamins and minerals that are important to kids, and do not contain any high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavours, or synthetic preservatives. Canada Organic

So at the end of the day, I think the overall reaction was definitely a positive one. Would I buy these bars for my kids again in the future? Yeah…I would. And I guess at the end of the day, that’s the most important thing.

G.H. Cretors Chicago Mix – Review & Popcorn Giveaway!

GH Cretors logo

I gotta admit…I’ve never been a fan of “sweet and salty”. For the most part, I prefer my sweet on its own and my salty on its own. But when I was approached with the chance to try and review G.H. Cretors’ Chicago Mix Popcorn, I jumped at the opportunity.

7_5oz GH CretorsBack in 1885, “Great Grandpa Cretors” invented the popcorn machine and a family business was born. Over the course of five generations, the company has continued to make popcorn in an “old fashioned” type of way with no added artificial colours, flavours, or preservatives. The company is extremely proud of the fact that their products are all natural, gluten-free with no GMOs (genetically modified organisms), and kosher. G.H. Cretors strives to provide the “cleanest”, most natural products that you can find.

For those who don’t know, Chicago Mix popcorn is a blend of caramel corn and cheese corn, and is considered one of the most unique flavours one can find that is associated with Chicago (the others being deep-dish pizza and Chicago-style hot dogs).

G.H. Cretors makes their caramel corn in a “classic” way; in old-fashioned copper kettles, one batch at a time. Not everybody can make caramel corn…it’s actually a difficult process to perfect. Cretors is lucky enough to have decades of experience behind them so you know the caramel corn is going to be top notch.

The “Chicago way” of making popcorn then includes cheese corn, which Cretors makes with a rich and creamy aged cheddar cheese.  When you blend these two flavours into one bag, the outcome is an incredibly unique “sweet & salty” flavour that is now an international taste sensation.

So that’s the history of the company and a description of Chicago Mix Popcorn. But at the end of the day, how does it taste?

One word: AWESOME!

41895308 The caramel corn is definitely sweet, but it’s got a smoothness than you don’t find with popcorn every day. It’s not “super-sweet”, either…so it’s a style of popcorn that I could find myself eating on its own. The cheese corn is a welcome treat, as I don’t think I’ve ever eaten cheese corn on its own before. By itself, it’s okay…but combined with the caramel corn and you’ve got a one-two punch that’s a flavour knockout (a cheesy description, I know…but it’s still apt).

So at the end of the day, I firmly believe I’ve found a popcorn that will REPLACE regular, buttered popcorn as my popcorn of preference. I honestly don’t know if I can enjoy popcorn the same way again without craving Chicago Mix instead. To say I love this product would be an understatement.

But don’t just take my word for it, you need to find out for yourself!! And the best way to do that is to WIN SOME FREE CHICAGO MIX POPCORN!!! That’s right…you can have some of your very own G.H. Creton Chicago Mix popcorn sent straight to your door (if you live within Canada or the continental United States).
