I read the news at 2:15pm Atlantic Standard Time: one of my childhood icons had passed away.
My first reaction was that it couldn’t be true. I mean, Prince was only 57 years old…there is no way he could’ve just died out of the blue. Right?
But then I saw that TMZ‘s website had crashed after they tweeted confirmation of his passing. Then I saw the reactions on Twitter. Then I saw Billboard.com confirm the death. It all just seemed surreal to me.
There weren’t a lot of artists in the 80’s that truly moved me with their music, but Prince was one of those artists. Sure, I was heavily into “hair metal” bands like KISS and Def Leppard, but the first time I heard ‘Little Red Corvette‘ was a moment that completely blew me away. I mean, I didn’t think I could ever heard a more incredible song ever.
That is until I first saw the video for ‘When Doves Cry‘, which completely blew me away. I mean, the sound was unlike anything I had ever heard before and who in the blue hell was this man crawling around on the bathroom floor naked??
I’m not going to go through his entire catalogue and give you reasons why he music was so incredible, just know that this man wrote the music and lyrics…he played most of the instruments…he could get up on stage with anyone and immediately jam with them with incredible guitar prowess. Never question the accolades you hear about him being a “musical genius”, because that’s exactly what he was.

I really hope that the official estate of Prince allow his music and videos to be played on YouTube (he was adamantly against it). Yes, his music is timeless and everyone can purchase and share it…but I want my children to fully enjoy and appreciate who he was as an artist. To properly do that, I want to show them his music videos so they can fall in love with his music AND appreciate who he was the way that I did.
He was a musical legend and one of the most prolific singer-songwriters of my generation. I’m extremely saddened at his passing and will never forget his incredible contributions to my life through his music.
