Sleeping Alone

I think that anybody who has ever been with somebody for a long time will tell you that they end up taking sleep for granted.  More specifically, they end up taking “sleeping together” for granted.

No, I’m not talking about sex. I’m talking about simply sharing a bed together and falling asleep.  For those married folk out there, how many nights do you NOT sleep next to your partner?  Do you not simply take it for granted that this is how it’s supposed to be?  You probably don’t even think twice about it.

Now think if you had to go two weeks at a time WITHOUT your partner next to you.

I’m not one to sit here and whine about being in a long-distance relationship.  The thing I probably hate the most, though, is trying to sleep alone after having one of our weekends together.

Without trying to sound too cheesy, when we sleep together it’s comfortable.  It’s like it was simply meant to be that these two bodies lay down close to one another and “turned off” for the night. I put my arm around her, she snuggles in, and all seems right with the world.

That first night apart?  It totally sucks.  Hell…the first three or four nights apart totally suck.  I usually stay up later than I should just so my body is forced to fall asleep.  Otherwise, I’d just lay there…tossing and turning…trying to get comfortable while my mind races.

It’s Tuesday morning and I’m already wishing it was April 15th, as that’s the next night I’ll be able to truly get a good night’s sleep.

  1. Wow, that sounds familiar.

And if for some reason, we’re not able to talk right before drifting off to sleep, he’ll stay up half the night. He says my voice soothes him. 🙂

Yea, I’m looking forward to that date too.

  2. It does suck. I agree. After spending 10 days straight with M, to going a week or two without him next to me, it is SO hard to sleep (especially 3K miles away). I can’t complain fully though since usually, I get to spend a few nights per week with him, but it does make it harder to sleep alone after! for sure.
