CBG’s 2010 in Review

JANUARY

01-05-10

– Rugrat arrived on December 21st and stayed through until January 5th.  She helped me realize that I’ve got a lot of work to do in the “parenting” department. Not that I’m a bad parent or anything, but it was difficult to adjust to a pre-teen’s personality 24/7 when I was only used to a 3 year old’s personality a few times each week. Still…I loved the visit and was sad to see her go.

– I tried some peanut-butter pizza. I gotta say it was a LOT better than you would think.

– My annual karaoke work performance was captured on film. Y’see, for three years in a row I’ve done “Baby Got Back” as my karaoke performance at the annual work event. In 2010, Sunshine videotaped it and I popped it online for the world to see. Now I may have flubbed the words a bit, but I think I rocked it. And yes…I’m performing the song once again in two weeks at the work event again. I have to at this point…I’m asked by co-workers if I’m going to do it. In fact, people stuck around last year only to hear the song! It’s tradition…I can’t break that!

FEBRUARY

I began viewing houses after putting mine on the market. Little did I know that it wouldn’t be until DECEMBER that I’d actually sell my place and move into something new.

Really? She was my #1 pick??

– Sunshine and I each created our “top five” list of celebrities we’d allow the other person to sleep with. Wait…that sounds really bad. Regardless…I’ve re-thought mine and my list needs to change. Expect a new list sometime in the new year.

I finally got my divorce paperwork after almost three years of being separated. I still have yet to be officially divorced. Procrastination…thy name is The Ex (and me, I guess).

MARCH

– There was quite a healthy discussion on whether or not men and women can simply be “just friends”.

TA-DAH!!!

Sunshine got her nose pierced and became even MORE attractive to me.

– I went on a search to find a dang Shamrock Shake from McDonalds somewhere in my area. It simply wasn’t to be found. I was NOT a happy camper.

– Sunshine and I got lost in the woods. Seriously.

APRIL

– I thought I had actually sold my house. Little did I know at the time that the financing would fall through and my house would continue to be on the market…sucking the life out of me in the process.  Okay…maybe it wasn’t THAT bad.

– I voiced my disdain for 2010’s American Idol finalists. What I would eventually find is that the original version of the program, Britain’s X-Factor, was FAR superior. Simon Cowell left Idol to bring X-Factor to
the States in fall 2011. I’ll definitely be watching.

– I bragged about just how awesome sex is with Sunshine. Is that wrong?

– We had a one-day “stay-cation” where we ended up meeting our first live Twitter friend/fellow blogger, Miranda.

MAY

– Ankle Biter had a stay in the hospital for a few days because of an operation being done to put tubes in his ears and to remove his tonsils & adenoids.

– It was Sunshine’s birthday and I did what I could to make it a memorable one for her (don’t ask me how I’m ever going to top it this year).

JUNE

This is Little Filthy...proof that I did, indeed, visit Random Esquire in person. SUCK ON THAT, PEEPS!!

I got to meet Random Esquire live and in person while in Chicago on business. Random Esquire is totally awesome, for those wanting to know if the real-life person is as cool as the online persona. I immediately fell in love with the city of Chicago after walking around for a few hours. I did all of the touristy things one is supposed to do…went to see a Cubs game, visited Millenium Park, went to the top of Willis (formerly Sears) Tower, tried some deep dish Chicago-style pizza, and even was treated to an amazing meal by RE. It was absolutely a trip I’ll always remember.

– While on that business trip, I was given an opportunity to move into a different position within my company. It was a scary thought as I had come to really get into a groove with my current job, but I took it as the possibilities for my future would be a lot better if I did as well at the new job as I did with the old job. As the year ends, I’m LOVING my new job and wouldn’t trade it back for my old job unless it was for a HUGE pay increase.

– Sunshine and I had some difficult times while dealing with the distance issue. We weren’t communicating the way we normally do and we were fighting more than we should have been. Thankfully, our  communication skills helped us through this (even though it spilled over into July) and the year ended with us more in love than we were at the beginning of the year.

JULY

– My mom broke her femur, which led to the discovery of more cancerous tumors in her leg and back. She’s had one helluva tough year.

– I talked more about sex. Well…more than I usually do, anyway. Must’ve been the summer heat or something.

AUGUST

I can't tell you just how awesome it was to see my kids get along so well all day.

Rugrat came to visit the same time I had taken a week off to hang with Ankle Biter while his babysitter was on vacation, all of which was both extremely stressful and extremely awesome at the same time. She’s a tornado, that one.

– Sunshine and her girls helped me celebrate Ankle Biter’s birthday a week early. She’s some kinda special, that one.

– I did just a little bit to try and put a smile on Jim “Depot Dad” Everson’s face while he battled cancer and asked others to also “pay it forward“. He was a memorable guy, that one.

SEPTEMBER

What else is this supposed to say? Happy Easter?

– I had an amazing birthday because of the love of an amazing woman.

– I had a horrific argument with The Ex that almost ended up with us both going to court to battle it out over custody of Ankle Biter. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed.

Jim Everson passed away…leaving a large whole in the “blogosphere” that will never be filled.

– I was “Freshly Pressed” by WordPress. That was kinda cool.

– Sunshine and I enjoyed our first hurricane together. Yes…”enjoyed” is the term I’m using.

OCTOBER

– Sunshine and I drove the Cabot Trail together. We stayed in a placed called Meat Cove. It rained….a lot. It was awesome. (Day One / Day Two)

NOVEMBER

I FINALLY sold my house.

I actually purchased a house.

– Sunshine and I celebrated TWO YEARS TOGETHER!!

– I went to Orlando on a business trip and got to be a kid again at both Universal Studios and the Islands of Adventure.

The hotel was surreal, too.

– I also got to attend my first NBA game by watching the Orlando Magic destroy the Phoenix Suns.

– While on the trip I got to fulfill one of my Bucket List items by singing with a live band in front of an audience (twice!). Thank goodness I didn’t suck.

DECEMBER

I moved out of one house and moved into another. I wasn’t prepared for the move out so Sunshine had to help me…A LOT. I wasn’t really wanting to move in and Sunshine noticed how much I still hadn’t unpacked as of last weekend. Can I just blame it on me being a dude?

**********

Wow.

So that’s pretty much my 2010 summed up. Still with me? Good. I appreciate the readers and the comments and the tweets that have been thrown my way in 2010 and I’m looking forward to continuing on in 2011.

Happy New Year’s everybody!

My Favorite Stuff of 2010

As 2010 comes to an end, I just thought I’d reflect on some of the things that stayed with me…

1. P!nk at the Grammys. Yeah…I know…this wasn’t really “news” or anything, but I gotta be honest: this was one of the most incredible performances I’ve ever seen.  It was like Cirque de Soleil mixed in with a bit of naughtiness and eloquence in addition to an amazing vocal all at the same time. I’m a HUGE fan of P!nk and this only solidified my crush on her.  Oh…and she was SMOKIN’ HOT, too!!

Watch the video HERE.

2. George Washington’s overdue library books. What…you didn’t hear about this??  Apparently, Washington signed out two books back in 1789 and forgot to return them.  With the inclusion of inflation over the years, the late fine would be around $300,000.  Fortunately, the New York Society Library didn’t want payment for the books…they just wanted them returned.

3. Captain Phil Harris of “Deadliest Catch” passed away. I’m a huge fan of Deadliest Catch and it came as a huge shock to find out that Captain Harris passed away while filming last season’s episodes.  While he wasn’t my favorite captain, he was a straight shooter and…above all else…he was a loving father who did whatever he could to show his sons a better way of doing things. He may be gone but he’ll never be forgotten by those who enjoyed his ‘no bullshit’ attitude and good-ol-boy sense of humor.

Hot Cuts

4. The first topless hair salon opened in Australia. Hey guys (and some of you ladies)…wouldn’t you like to actually ENJOY getting your hair cut?  Well, travel on down to Hot Cuts in Sydney and you’ll be able to get your hair styled by beautiful, topless hairdressers.  Hair stylists?  Hair ho’s?  C’mon…this story is so ridiculous it’s awesome!  I mean…how long will this place actually stay open?  A year, maybe?  Is this really what the world has been waiting for??  I just don’t see the attraction of a topless hair salon.  Okay…I might actually see the attraction, but it’s not like I’m going to grow my hair out just to go there or anything.

5. Lady Gaga talented…weird…likes meat. Listen…I’ll be the first to admit that I enjoy some of Lady Gaga’s songs.  I’m also going to admit that when she wants to, she can be a very attractive woman.  But people…this chick is F*CKED UP.  I know she wants to be a trend-setter and be the new-age Madonna and everything, but do you really need to wear a meat dress in order to make that happen?  Can you not just be slightly weird and then let your talent speak for itself?  I dunno…it’s interesting and all, but at the end of the day will she want her ridiculousness to over-shadow her talent?  It might get to the point where nobody takes her seriously anymore.

6. Lost ended with a giant “meh”. I don’t know if I was one of those people who felt like I had wasted five years of my life watching every episode of every season, but count me as one of those people who was kinda let down with the ending of the series.  Sideways storylines?  Meeting in the afterlife?  It was all real but it wasn’t?  I was hoping for more bang for my buck, but I guess I got what I paid for.

7. It was cool to like Bret Michaels again. Kinda. Listen…I’m a Poison fan from WAAAAY back, so forgive me if I was just a bit happy to know that I could listen to Talk Dirty To Me one more time without feeling a ton of guilt about it. Between his battling illness and then winning The Apprentice and then having yet another reality tv show, this was the year of Bret Michaels.  Kinda.  Let’s just say that 2010 was probably the best and worst year of Michaels’ life.

8. Man v Food. I can’t tell you the hours of joy that this show has brought me in 2010.  It’s totally wrong on so many levels, but I don’t care.  I have fun pretending to have my own battles with food.  Hell…I even ate a large calzone while out with Sunshine and, once devoured, I made her take a picture of me doing the “man won” sign:

In this battle of man vs food...MAN WON!!

I know…it’s sad but true.

So what about you?  What stuck out for you in 2010?

When It’s Over

I read some disturbing news last night over at Ms Single Mama’s website.  Apparently her and ‘John Bear’ broke up their engagement…on Christmas Eve, no less.

It’s disturbing because a picture had been painted of their relationship through her words; a picture of blissful happiness and finding “the one”.  He proposed…she said ‘yes’…they bought a house together…her son called him “dad”.  Everything seemed perfect. She inspired a lot of people to help believe in love again.

Apparently there were issues, though…and because I’m just a reader (as we all are) I didn’t know all of the details of what was going on behind the scenes of her blog in her “real life”.

Sunshine and I discussed the break-up last night and we talked how our relationship also inspires people.  We wondered if our blogs portrayed a “peachy keen” version of our relationship…if perhaps we weren’t being 100% honest in how we described things.  I mean seriously…we do appear to be happy A LOT OF THE TIME.

But then we sat back and realized that while we do have the occasional argument, 90% of our relationship is, in fact, “peachy keen”.  We still have that “butterfly” feeling of being in love.  We still laugh together.  We still love to talk with each other.  We truly believe that we’re as happy as our multiple photos show we are.

If it ever becomes close to being over, we’ll know well in advance.  Heck…I think you’ll know, too.  Our relationship is real enough and strong enough that we’ll be able to recognize it and do our best to work through it before it becomes an issue too big to handle.  And we blog…maybe not about 100% of our lives, but a lot of it…so you’ll probably be able to recognize the signs when we do.

IF that ever happens.

But going back to “the news”, I’m very sorry to hear about the break-up of Alaina and John.  Hopefully they can both find happiness in 2011…whatever form happiness may take.

Christmas 2010 in Pictures

Hey gang.

I hope everybody had a great holiday. Sunshine and I spent the Christmas holidays together and we couldn’t be happier.  But when you’re happy that normally means you’re too busy to blog very much; thus you’re getting a picture post today (which is probably more interesting than me yapping on and on anyway).

Once Ankle Biter and I made our way to Halifax on Christmas Eve, we thought it only made sense to watch a Christmas movie. The unanimous decision? "Elf"!! Will Ferrell movies can be hit and miss sometimes, but this movie has totally turned into a holiday classic. We loved it!
Once "Elf" was done, we all head out in the car to go Christmas light watching. Honestly, we hit the jackpot on one of our first houses...the lights were incredible and had traffic stopping on both sides of the road. As we tried to drive around the city looking for more houses with great Christmas decorations (well...I was looking for Griswald-esque houses), the kids started to get a little bored...so we made our way back home and settled in for the night while watching Santa updates on the NORAD website.
The Christmas tradition that Sunshine has started is that her kids are allowed to open up one gift on Christmas Eve and it's always new pajamas. This pic is the kids in their new PJ's...a tradition I'm glad to now be a part of with Ankle Biter.
No...you can't tell these kids are the offspring of CBG & Sunshine, can you??
I gotta say...Sunshine and I stood back and were quite impressed with what Santa had brought our children. Obviously, we'd give the kids an entire house full of gifts if we could...but the kids loved it and if they're happy, then so are we.
Ankle Biter on Christmas morning was about as happy as he could be. His happiness made ME happy.
And as happy as Ankle Biter was on Christmas morning, Sunshine's two girls were just as happy with their haul.
Emm was quite content to sit back and read once the presents were all opened and accounted for.
While Emm was reading, Ankle Biter and Mo were busy playing together. They really got along, and that made Sunshine and I very happy parents...knowing our kids got along so well. It totally helps our relationship blossom just that much more.
After we dropped Sunshine's girls off at their dad's, we all head off to have Christmas dinner with my family. It didn't take more than 10 minutes before he passed out in the back seat.

And that was our Christmas holiday. Details are insignificant.  All that needs to be said is that at the end of the day, we all had a great time and it was one helluva family Christmas.

Snowed In

It’s a day off for both of us…the kids aren’t here with us…we’ve got nothing planned…and the first major snowstorm of the season is dumping a pile of snow on us.

So while Sunshine isn’t scheduled to go back home until tomorrow, it’s still a pretty great feeling to be snowed-in with the one you love. I can’t wait to do nothing (yeah…”nothing”…heh) with her for the rest of the day.

Hope everybody had a great Christmas weekend!

It’s All About The Auto-Tune

Last night I wasn’t in the best of moods.  There were some things going on that kinda brought me down in the dumps…with a vengeance.  Normally I’m the “happy guy”, yet I had forgotten what I needed to do in order to bring me out of my funk.

MUSIC!!!

I’m a musical animal by nature.  I wanted to be a DJ growing up and actually did the club DJ gig for almost a decade back in my 20’s. So no matter how depressed I may or may not be, the right song can totally pick me up.

So as I woke up this morning and realized that I hadn’t pre-written a blog post, it seemed that I should attempt to share my musical happiness with all of you.

Starting off is a new song by The Lonely Island.  These guys are the comics who brought you “Dick In A Box” a few years ago with Justin Timberlake.  Well, they’ve got a new album and the first single is a song that’s actually racing up the charts and features Akon.  I didn’t know it was a comedy song at first, but once I heard the lyrics I quickly picked up on things.

There isn’t any nudity or cursing, but I would still define this as being NSFW…

The next two songs are from the group that brought “Auto-Tune the News” to YouTube, The Gregory Brothers.  I gotta tell you…based on these two songs alone, they’re my new favorite band.

Here’s the backstory…

The Gregory Brothers find a news story that they like, write a song about it, then turn the news story into melody using auto-tune technology.

Here’s the first example: Antoine Dodson.  This guy was interviewed because he woke up to find an intruder trying to rape his sister in the next room.  The video went viral because he was just so animated and made him an instant 15-Minutes of Fame type of celebrity for 2010.  This is the original news story (which makes me laugh out loud EVERY time I watch it) that now has over 25 MILLION hits on YouTube:

Got it?  Okay…here is the Bed Intruder Song that the Gregory Brothers created.  It became so popular that they sold it on iTunes (I bought a copy) and split the money with Antoine…helping him buy a new house in the process (seriously…that’s how popular this is). This is catchy as all get-out…

Now tell me this isn’t BRILLIANT!!

Now there’s one more video by the Gregory Brothers that’s more recent that has me bouncing around like I was teenager again.  This woman (named Diana) was a witness to an attempted robbery at a convenience store where the clerk ended up chasing the robbers away by shooting at them.

Her original interview is here:

Now here is the absolutely AWESOME auto-tune remix (also available on iTunes…and yes, I bought this one, too)…

Seriously…tell me that this song didn’t have your toe tapping?!?!? Ahhh…suddenly I’m feeling a LOT better.  Hopefully these brought a smile to your faces, too.

Last one…

It’s Christmastime!!!  What better way for a Canadian to celebrate Christmas than to listen to a rockin’ version of Frosty the Snowman that includes hockey, Mr. Lahey from the Trailer Park Boys, and even Joey Jeremiah from Degrassi???

Feel better yet?  Have you smiled at least ONCE today?  The moral of the story?

ENJOY LIFE!!!  IT’S TOO SHORT NOT TO!!!
