The Race…Win Or Lose?

Well…when I last left you wonderful readers (at least in terms of this particular story), I was preparing for my race. What race? THIS race. It’s been five months in the making and it finally took place yesterday afternoon after work.

I mean…I’ve been training for this for months. I started out when it was 30 below in the dead of winter:

I’m ready for you!!

I even trained while on vacation. I mean, here it was 6am in the middle of the Caribbean on a cruise ship, and I was at the gym workin’ it:

KILLING my morning workout!!

I trained in the cold rain:

Cold April showers? No problem!

I trained in the hot sun:

It’s frickin’ 30 degrees outside. What the heck was I thinking?

Truth be told, though, I hadn’t been training as much as I should over the past month or so. It was really combination of things. For one, I had lost my “mojo” when it came to the race itself. He wasn’t talking about it…people at work weren’t talking about it…there seemed to be very little interest. Second, I have been so stressed running around trying to get a job so I could move to Sunshine’s city with her in addition to worrying about finances and my daughter flying down to visit and a number of other things. There just hasn’t seemed to be much time to train like I was back in March and April.

Last week we set the exact date and time of the race because of pressure from people at work who hadn’t forgotten our silly little bet. It was to take place Monday at 5:30pm after work. After being home all weekend, you would think that I would have been training hard. That didn’t happen primarily because I didn’t want to injure myself in any way and give anybody an excuse if I didn’t win. I had been having shin splint issues from the second month on, so I didn’t want that to happen to me during the race.

It was quarter past five and I went to the washroom to go change into my shorts and t-shirt. I downed a Red Bull just to make sure I had a bit of “oomph” in my step and I made my way outside.

Three or four people quickly turned into what looked like thirty, and then someone came over with a video camera and started asking me questions about the race. It was a fellow co-worker who also does video editing as a side job, so who knows what he is going to come up with from this thing.

My buddy and I then went over to the “start/finish line” (i.e. a telephone pole) and had a good nervous laugh about the whole thing.

Laughing off some pre-race jitters.

My confidence from early on was waning just a little bit. I didn’t think he had been training, but I wasn’t sure if he really had or not. I had given him multiple opportunities to just quit and forget the whole thing, but he never did. I even suggested we run at 7am before it got too hot outside, but he declined because he knew a lot of people wanted to watch. This all made me feel as though he had something up his sleeve that I didn’t know about.

All of a sudden, somebody said “GO!” and off we went…

Aaaaand we’re off!

I knew my plan going in…long strides at a good pace for the first third of the course, then (hopefully) a bit of rest while he caught up to me. As soon as we took off, I heard his “coaches” (i.e. some women from work who had been walking with him and helping him train) yell out for him to take his time. I didn’t want to be distracted so I just kept on going.

I got to the point I wanted to get to and stopped. I turned around and saw that he was pretty far behind me. I waved for him to come up and talk to me for a minute (we were in a very grassy area so people couldn’t really see what we were doing). He started jogging right by me!

DUDE!!

He stopped briefly and I let him catch his breath a bit. I told him that we could both cross the finish line at the same time if he wanted, but he declined and started jogging again. “No problem”, I thought…and I bolted past him again.

But then I started thinking that I didn’t need to kill myself to win. In fact, I was pretty confident at this point and felt I could ease up to catch my breath a bit (I’m still not in the best shape, after all). So I slowed down so he could catch up and pass me…

Wait…he was THAT far ahead of me?

At this point I could hear his cheering section (which included his wife!!) and realized that the grass wasn’t as thick here and people could see. I sped up again…passed him again…and slowed down again. I didn’t just want to rest up a bit, I wanted to make him feel as though he had a fighting chance.

We made our way around the final corner and I was just ahead of him…

Time to stop playing around.

I realized that I didn’t have the time to sit back play with him any longer because there was the (remote) possibility that he could find some burst of energy and embarrass me in the final feet of the race. So I took off…and I continued…and I didn’t slow down.

I got this!!

And in a VERY unattractive way, I finished the race first!

Wow…ugliest finish of a race ever.

I went to congratulate my pal but he looked like he was going to die. It literally took him five minutes to catch his breath enough to come shake my hand. I was concerned about him, but realized I probably didn’t look a whole lot better, either.

So the race is over, I’ve won, and now the stipulations have to take place. He owes me $50 (the REAL reason I took this bet), which I’ll take to use when buying him a dress at a local used clothing store. He has already told me that he’ll wear the dress next Friday, so it looks like it’s a done deal.

When all is said and done, we’ve both won in a way. I’ve lost 25 pounds, he’s lost almost 30 pounds. I’m now NOT adverse to trying to integrate exercise into my daily routine (seriously Sunshine…I’m not…lol) and my eating habits are a LOT better than they ever were before.

Of course, Sunshine thinks I’m now the living embodiment of a Seinfeld episode…but we all need those moments every once in awhile, don’t we?

I’m Not Wearing Any Pants

The world is a crazy place…

Scotty McCreery

- So Scotty won American Idol last night.  Meh…I guess I could see that coming.  I mean, it’s not like the guy sucks or anything…he’s a very good country crooner and will have a great career as time goes on.  I guess my problem is that I really didn’t think he was the best performer/singer/artist out of the Top 10 that they had this year.  The season certainly wasn’t without it’s controversies (all that positivity, Tyler’s cursing/creepy glares, J-Lo’s improbable musical comeback), but I gotta tell you that I stopped watching entirely once Pia got voted out.

Pia Toscano

I realize that AI is more of a popularity contest instead of a singing competition, but when Pia got voted out as early as she did I just didn’t care about the show anymore because (to me, at least) all credibility in the competition was lost (and I know Random Esquire was also quite upset in learning she was gone…if that tells you anything). In addition, with James gone I didn’t even care about the final three at all…he was my second choice to win the whole thing.  So yeah…thanks, American Idol. I couldn’t care less.

- I am watching The Voice, however.  Do I think the singing is better?  Well…it’s still really too early to tell. I’m intrigued by the gimmicky nature of the show, but I don’t know if fans will tune in once the gimmicks are done (the blind auditions, the “battle” rounds). I didn’t think I’d like the combination of judges that they had, regardless of their fame.  However, I’m enjoying their banter and think all four of them not only have chemistry but have something that AI didn’t have this season with their judges: honesty in their reviews even if it’s not positive.

- Why in the blue hell do people post their lives on Facebook for the world to see?  We’re not talking anonymous blog posts and I’m not talking about pictures or where you are or things of that nature.  But things like this:

Is there such thing as TOO much information?  I mean, do you really need to tell the world that your kid shit on the floor? Do you REALLY need to tell the world that you’re a fuck-up in a blatant attempt to garner sympathy from your friends?

And what’s worse…why are people LIKING these status updates??? What are they liking?  And what’s worse…these are from my sister.  And what’s worse…she’s even more annoying than her status updates in person.

** shudder **

- Remember Chyna?  Wrestling fans should…reality fans might, as well.  It’s kinda sad but once she left wrestling she just couldn’t find any other avenue with her life.  She got into drugs/alcohol, she ended up making a sex tape (doesn’t everybody in Hollywood these days?), she changed her name legally from Joanie Laurer to Chyna just so she could continue to exploit her fleeting fame from her days as a wrestler, and kinda drifted in and around Hollywood doing nothing (she even OD’d on sleeping pills last year).

Oh dear god...

Well…her lust for fame and fortune have resulted in an announcement that’s really five-to-ten years too late: she’s officially getting into porn at age 40. I had the extreme misfortune to have watched her last video, and that really did not scream out “sequel” to me.  However, apparently Vivid has already helped her make a new video called “Backdoor into Chyna” that…ummm…excuse me…I just threw up in my mouth a little and need to go to another topic quickly.  Yikes.

The new cast of Two & a Half Men

- I’m hesitant to admit this, but I might actually try watching Two & A Half Men now that Ashton Kutcher is replacing Charlie Sheen. I doubt I’ll like it, but I’m intrigued enough to give it a shot.  And as for Charlie?  I dunno…I hope the guy can recover his career somehow. He had a sweet gig and now it’s gone.  And because he’s in Hollywood, whatever millions he had in the bank are also probably gone because actors always think money will flow into their lives easily so they spend more than they make.  You’re still winning in my book, Charlie…just don’t go off the deep end again.  On second thought, that’s when you were the most entertaining.  Never mind…get batshit insane again.

- I’m “superhero’d” out and I haven’t seen any bloody movies yet.  I mean, I’ll be the first to say I’ve always enjoyed superhero movies of the “new era”…from X-Men to Daredevil (yes…Daredevil) to The Dark Knight. But as I get ready to see Thor tonight I’m already tiring of the superhero movies coming out this summer.  Next on the agenda is X-Men: First Class, which just looks unnecessary to me. I’m sure it’ll be a great movie and all but I’ve got zero desire to watch it.  Then it’s Captain America, which looks good but I’m still a little wary of it.  Can they really make the transition of this character to the big screen and then realistically have him “frozen” so that he’s available for next year’s Avengers movie?  Yikes.

But then the biggest question mark of them all: Green Lantern. I’m a big Ryan Reynolds fan so I think this movie should be great in terms of the Hal Jordan character, but there is just SOOOOO much special effect work that it’s really going to be a hit-or-miss situation. Will you tire of the special effects after 20 minutes? Will the story be as confusing as it looks?  I dunno…but with another Batman movie being made, a “reboot” of Spiderman, yet another “reboot” of Superman, and then the Avengers movie all coming out within the next year or so I think I’ll just about have my fill of superheroes.

- The Hangover 2 has a lot of male genitalia, apparently.  Will that prevent me from watching it?  No, because the first one was really funny an this one looks halfway decent.  But at least you can consider yourself better prepared for all the penis you will see if you go to the movie. I, for one, feel better now that I have provided this public service announcement.

- Anna Kournikova is now a trainer on The Biggest Loser.  Really??

- Sunshine is coming to visit me this weekend.  I don’t think she’s been in my city since January, so this will be quite the special event.  Although having said that, my house is a PIG STY and I need to do some major cleaning in the next 24 hours.  We don’t have any huge plans, but it’ll end up being a pretty busy weekend with the local farmer’s markets on Saturday morning, a double-date with a co-worker and his wife on Saturday night, and then visiting my family again this Sunday afternoon (they LOVE her).  When we’re not running the roads, I’m hoping we can just sit back and enjoy each other’s company, as it was a little hectic last weekend with the kids and it’ll be hectic again next weekend with the kids (but in a GOOD way!).  We definitely appreciate the downtime together.

- I hit my online Relay for Life donation goal!  Thanks to some awesome people I was able to raise $500 online for my team.  At this point, my team has raised almost $3,000!!!  I gotta say that this is pretty awesome.  I’m really proud of the team and I’m very much looking forward to doing this again next year.  For those of you who read this blog and donated, I really do appreciate it.  Thank you so very, very much.

- Oh…for those wondering…no, I’m not wearing any pants as I write this post.  You’re welcome.

The last to know…

Honestly, it was 3:34pm EST this afternoon before hearing the news about Osama Bin Laden being killed.  Seriously.  Don’t ask me how…I’m normally a very up-to-the-minute-news kinda guy.

So yeah…just saw these and chuckled a bit.
See ya, Osama.

Fucker.

Welcome to Miami…eventually

VACATION DAY ONE: MIAMI, FLORIDA

Well…the initial plans on “Day One” didn’t quite work out as we had planned.

The happy couple at 2:30am

Sunshine and I got up at 2:30am and, after picking up my dad and my little brother at their hotel, arrived at Halifax airport at 4:00am. It turned out that the previous night’s Delta flight into Halifax had been canceled because of dense fog.  What that meant is that there wasn’t any plane around in the morning (Delta doesn’t run much into the area) and the flight to New York’s JFK airport was canceled.

Sunshine did NOT like the 3-hour wait.

We waited THREE HOURS before even getting a chance to talk to one of the two ladies working the counter. The problem was that there were large families ahead of us who needed to catch flights and connections…so you can imagine the re-working these ladies had to do in order to accommodate these last minute changes during one of the busiest months of the year (one family of six had to be re-routed together all the way to Australia…yikes!!).

Once we finally got to talk to somebody, they hooked us up with a flight to Boston…then Memphis…then Miami.  The only problem was that we were stuck in Boston for SEVEN hours and weren’t able to get into Miami until almost 11pm, basically nullifying our first day of vacation.

Bah.

But we didn’t really care, to be honest…we just wanted to get there and where our ship didn’t leave until the next day, all was still good.

Sunshine relaxing at Logan Airport

Once we arrived at Logan airport, we tried to book a standby scenario…Boston to Washington, Washington to Miami. Unfortunately that one didn’t work out.  Then we tried Boston to Atlanta, Atlanta to Miami.  Unfortunately, that one didn’t  pan out, either.  So we ended up there seven hours and didn’t get into our Miami hotel until almost midnight.

After a long, stressful day we almost immediately fell asleep. It was a good thing, too, because we got up first thing on Sunday morning and went outside to realize that we were staying in a beautiful hotel…

This is what we saw first thing in the morning after we woke up in Miami. Ummm..."WINNING!!"

The lobby/bar area of Miami Hilton

I loved taking this picture of Sunshine. I really thought the sunlight and the water just brought that extra sparkle out of her.

This was the entrance to a walkway which led to a beautiful gazebo situated on the edge of the lake that surrounded the property.

This was the gazebo that was built specifically to show off the beautiful surroundings outside of the hotel. Trust me...the view was truly magnificent.

This was the view of the Miami Airport Hilton from the gazebo. I can barely believe that we were actually there only a week ago.

I’ll call this an end to Day One of our vacation because, quite frankly, the real Day Two didn’t take place until we boarded our ship.

To be continued tomorrow…

I’m Baaaaaack!!!

Hey everybody!!

As of this writing it’s 3am and I am DEAD tired.  So Sunshine suggested that instead of writing a post on my first day back, I give you just a couple of photographic teases of what’s to come over the next week or two.

So here we go…

So that’s it for now.  You’ll just have to sit back and wonder what the stories are behind some of these photos.  Hopefully you’ll enjoy the tale of our odyssey.

Until tomorrow…
