My Fantasy Football Team: Week Nine

This week I lost…again. And this week was a pretty close match-up, so I’ll take full responsibility for not going with my gut feeling on who to play. I over-thought things and it came back to bite me.

Y’see, I knew that Willis McGahee was scheduled to play against a fairly week Oakland run defense. The only problem was that he was coming back from an injured hand, which can definitely be a hindrance to a running back.  Jackie Battle is now the featured back in Kansas City, and even though he was going up against a decent Miami run defense, the team was winless and it really looked to be the better match-up.

Wow…did I play that wrong.

At one point on Sunday morning, I actually put McGahee in the starting line-up.  Then I thought about it…then I went to the message boards…then I went to the “expert” sites to see how they ranked each one. Against my own gut instinct, I put Battle back into my rotation…and that decision ended up costing me the win.

So now I see that Miles Austin is injured. Looks like I’ll be putting in Steve Breaston next weekend and hoping he can continue to be the primary receiver in Kansas City.

Why in the world have I got two Chiefs on my fantasy team anyway? What the heck am I thinking??

So much to talk about…so little time.

Normally I find myself having a difficult time trying to find topics to blog about. Today, though, I’ve got three separate topics that could each be a post…but I think I’ll combine them into one just because I need to get these ramblings out of my head!

1. My fantasy football team blew chunks this past weekend. Okay…that’s a bit harsh, but I was really disappointed in the stats from some of my players.  I mean, the Eagles have had no defense all year long but all of a sudden they shut down a potent Dallas offense??  Miles Austin (again) got horrible numbers.  Not only that, but all of my running backs totally under-performed this weekend.

Darren Sproles has been a great sleeper pick for me, but he had a rough time against the pitiful Rams (as did the entire Saints team, apparently). Ahmad Bradshaw had a difficult time against the woeful Dolphins.  And honestly…Bernard Scott performed as well as I expected for a one-week fill-in for Cedric Benson against a tough-against-the-run Seattle team.

Tom Brady…well, I don’t know what to say about Brady. It seems that ever since he cut his hair, his performance has gone downhill fast. He needs to pick it up and deliver like he did at the beginning of the season.

Thank goodness for my Detroit pick-up.  They did exactly what I hoped they would do while my Jets were on a bye. In fact, if it wasn’t for them this weekend wouldn’t have at least been as respectable as it ended up being.

4-4…yeesh.

2. I got to take my son out for Halloween. I wanted The Ex to bring Ankle Biter over my place so I could see him dressed-up for Halloween. Turns out that she wasn’t going to be able to get off work early enough to make it happen.  So she asked me if I wanted to come with them trick-or-treating.

I really wanted to see Ankle Biter and the thought of being with him on Halloween night seemed like fun. So I showed up just as he was dressed and ready to hit some houses. The Ex and I get along pretty decently 99% of the time, and this was a fun experience…watching him go from house to house and getting excited about the candy. Mind you, he was done after about 10 houses…but that was fine. I got to experience trick-or-treating with him and he really enjoyed having the both of us there.

I think this may become a tradition for the next few years…both parents taking him out for Halloween.  As long as we can continue to get along, this should be a regular event.

Oh…and Ankle Biter was Bumblebee for the night. He couldn’t have been more excited.

3. I’m participating in Movember this year.  I had thought about doing it in previous years, but didn’t know the reasons or rationale behind it all. After reading up on it (and after a suggestion by Sunshine), I decided to do it this year.

But I’m not just about growing a moustache, but also about the message behind it. I have joined “the movement” and will be donating my upper lip to the cause for 30 days. My Mo will spark conversations, and no doubt generate some laughs; all in the name of raising vital awareness and funds the battle against prostate cancer.

So why am I now so passionate about men’s health?

  • On average men live 4-5 years less than women
  • 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime
  • 25,500 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year in Canada

I invite you to support me by donating to me http://mobro.co/toddiscanadian

You can even go old school and write a cheque payable to “Movember Canada”, reference my name and Registration Number 1912536 and send it to: Movember Canada, 119 Spadina Avenue, PO Box 65, Toronto, ON M5T 2T2

All donations are tax deductible.

We only have a month to grow Mos and raise awareness and fund, so please come along for the ride. Funds raised will help make a tangible difference to the lives of others. Through the Movember Foundation and their men’s health partner, the Prostate Cancer Canada, Movember is funding world class awareness, research, educational and support programs which would otherwise not be possible.

My Fantasy Football Team: Week Seven

I rebounded last week with a pretty impressive win, bringing my record up to a 2nd-place-in-the-league 4-2.

Then came this past weekend…

I knew it was going to be tough. I had FIVE (count ‘em…FIVE) of my starters on a bye week, so I wasn’t expecting a ton of points from the back-ups.

I was disheartened by Jay Cutler, who I put in my line-up in place of Tom Brady. I mean…really? You couldn’t get more than 10 points for me? Then Willis McGahee got hurt. Then my Jets only got me six point. Then that Carolina tight end decided he didn’t want to play at all.

But the most disappointing for me was the BRUTAL performance by Miles Austin in a big-time Dallas win over the hapless Rams. Dude only caught two passes for sixteen yards. That’s it. 16. I was floored when I saw his stats. And the sad part was that I really needed him to perform well, too.

Yes, I realize that I could VERY easily claim that going up against Arian Foster’s 41.40 points would have been an insurmountable odd to overcome. The problem is that even if Foster didn’t play, I still would have lost the week…so there’s no point in crying about it.

I’ve got a couple of waiver requests in place for this week. The Jets defense is on a bye and I’m not sold on my current back-up, the Patriots, so I’m trying to pick up Detroit in a nice match-up (going up against a Denver team that allowed SEVEN sacks last weekend). I’m also going to try to get David Akers back (I had to drop him this week because he was on a bye).

Returning to the line-up next week will be Tom Brady, Jeremy Maclin, Ahmad Bradshaw, and Rob Gronkowski…so I really think my team is looking up if the waivers go through.

So wish me luck. I’m still doing okay at 4-3 but I’d be in pretty good shape for the playoffs with a two or three game winning streak.

My Fantasy Football Team: Week Five

This is going to be a new weekly post that’ll go up every Tuesday once my fantasy stats are finalized.  It’s obviously directed to the chosen few awesome people in the world who follow the NFL.

*****

My fantasy football team’s been gettin’ smoked over the past two weeks and I don’t know what to do about it.

I started off 3-0…dominating my opponents in a way not seen in a millenium (okay…that’s kind of a slight exaggeration).  Then I dropped one to another undefeated team.  No big deal, right? I’d bounce back this past weekend against the only 0-4 team in the league.

Right???

Yikes.

So here I stand at 3-2. I could claim that the bye weeks have hurt me, but this upcoming weekend the bye weeks strike again as I lose Washington (supposedly the #1 WR on the Titans now that Britt’s gone for the season) and Tolbert (who had such a great first two weeks but now seems to be placed on the back burner in San Diego).

And while my fantasy team would show otherwise, I really I dislike the Patriots (I’m a Jets fan). I benched the Jets defense because I thought Brady would “go to town” like he did in one of their match-ups last year (he didn’t). I thought that the Pats defense would accumulate more points than the Jets defense (they didn’t). I thought Gronkowski would (again) score way more points than my back-up TE, Greg Olsen (he didn’t).  Hell…after weeks of double-digit points I finally put Darren Sproles in my starting line-up and left Willis McGahee on my bench in the thought that he’d score more (he didn’t).

Would I have won my weekend anyway? No…so there’s no sense in complaining about my management skills (or lack thereof). I’m just wondering what in the world I need to do in order to get my team back on the winning track.

On paper, I’ve got a much better match-up this weekend with the return of Miles Austin from injury and also Peyton Hillis coming off of a bye week. On paper, this shouldn’t be too difficult of a battle.

Let’s hope I can get back into the win column. I’m still first place in my division, but I truly believe I’ve got a team that could run away with this thing. I just need them to start playing like they should.

Bah.

Fantasy Football – Blogosphere Style!!

Alright…I am a HUGE NFL fan. I know since I’m Canadian that I should love the NHL or at the very least the CFL, but I don’t.  I’m not a hockey fan nor am I a curling fan.

I love the National Football League.

And every year I am always a part of a fantasy football league.  Sometimes I’m even in multiple leagues, as is the case this year where I’m part of a pay-league and also part of a couple of free leagues.

For this year, I’d like to see if there is anybody out in the Blogosphere or the Twitterverse that would like to join my league.  So far I’ve got myself and two Twitter friends and I’d love to have more people join us…maybe 8 or even 12 teams in total.

All you gotta do is email me at Canadian.Bald.Guy@gmail.com and I’ll send an invite out to you.

There’s no real “prize” per se, except maybe a blog post in your honor and the bragging rights that come with winning.

It’s a Yahoo league and we’ll have an online draft sometime in late August/early September before the season starts.

So what say you?  The first five-to-nine people who email me will be in!!
