Fun Music Friday

Yesterday was a pretty brutal day.  I need to find a way to enjoy today.

The plan is to take the afternoon off (I’ve got one half-day left at work and it doesn’t fit into my schedule for the rest of the month, so I’m taking it today), send out Rugrat’s Christmas gifts via courier to Ontario, finish doing some laundry, wrap some gifts, and then pick up Ankle Biter for a great weekend together.

To help kick off my “planned good day”, I’ve decided to turn to what almost always seems to help lift my spirits…music.

I’ll start off with a song that, for the past few years, has given me great joy during the holidays. It’s a rockin’ take on a Christmas classic…

Do you remember Aqua? That whole “Barbie Girl” song from 10 or 12 years ago? Well…they’re back this year. Being a former DJ who used to really enjoy their music, I just had to check them out. While the video’s a little bizarre, I’ve found that the song has been played repeatedly on my iPod as of late. Close your eyes and see if you agree…

As some of you may know, I’ve been watching both the US version of X-Factor and the original UK version at the same time. Recently, a former contestant (Olly Murs, a runner-up in 2009/2010) debuted a new single alongside the Muppets to promote both the song and their movie. As much as I enjoyed their performance, I think I like the video a bit more. It’s not the rock I normally listen to, but it’s the guy’s fourth #1 single in the UK and I think it’s catchy as all get-out…

Here’s the backstory on the band of this last video: The lead singer was on Canadian Idol in its second season and ended up third (he had been my pick to win it all). The show was only on the air six seasons before it was canceled for low ratings and I don’t know of any other contestant (or winner, for that matter) who has done anything of note since it started in 2003 (actual Canadian album sales of the contestants here).

But Jacob Hoggard immediately went and created a band called Hedley once the show was over. In the years since, I’d dare say that Hedley has become the number one Canadian band over the past five years or so (Nickelback excluded). If I had to make an American comparison, I’d say probably Good Charlotte without the pretentiousness.

Anyway, this last video gets to me for some reason (probably because I’m a big softy). It’s one of those “inspirational” type videos, but it’s done quite well. Check it out…

That’s all I got today. Hopefully, if these songs didn’t make you smile then I hope you can find happiness in whatever music you decide to listen to. Just make sure you find the time to smile today…you’ll thank yourself for doing so.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

My Dad’s Loud Outdoor Holiday Music

My dad’s a big fan of the holidays (even though it’ll be tough this year without mom for the first time). One of the things he enjoys doing is adding music to his lights outside. The thing that makes me laugh (and hence, the reason for this post) is that he usually has music BLARING outside all day and in the evening until about 11pm.

As I mention in the video, he knows it’s loud enough when the neighbours complain.

Heh.

So forgive the mo (that thing’s getting shaved REAL soon), but enjoy the quick video I made last night of my dad’s REALLY loud outdoor holiday music.

Molding A Musical Mind

Music is one of my passions in life…whether it’s classic rock or hip hop or even a club tune, I’m just a massive fan of music in general as it means so much to me.

As I see Ankle Biter listening to various music on the radio and in my car (of different genres), I thought I’d take a quick look back at my own childhood thru to adulthood to see what music has truly molded my musical mind.

1. Double Platinum – KISS

I may have mentioned once or twice before that I am a long-time KISS fan. In fact, I went into great detail at one point explaining just how and why I became a fan. Needless to say, this album was the first one I ever owned and it completely changed my life. And it’s never been about the make-up, either…because at the time I didn’t even know they wore make-up. I was just a six-year-old kid fascinated by this incredible music that I was hearing.

From Strutter to Firehouse to Cold Gin to Deuce…this record is absolutely my all-time favorite and didn’t only make me a KISS fan, but it made me a music fan.

2. Hysteria – Def Leppard

Yes…I got caught up in the hysteria of this album when it released back in ’87. I thought there was a blueprint to how a hard rock record should sound. This, however, broke all stereotypes. Never had the “pop-rock-metal” fusion sounded so good. And it wasn’t just one a few songs, but the entire frickin’ album was great.

This album is one of those “never be able to top again” types but I’ll tell ya…it doesn’t get much better than the title track, Armageddon It, or the incredibly catchy Pour Some Sugar On Me. Just some great music all around.

3. Gordon – Barenaked Ladies

Okay…you may be asking yourself, “What? Really?” But for me, no other album spoke to me as a university student like this record.

Some people claim that they were a fan of a band from the very beginning. Well, in storage I’ve still got the independently released cassette that they sold before they got a record deal. So yeah…I’ve been a fan of this band since the very beginning.

This album spoke to me because it was catchy…it was fun…and the songs were written from the perspective of somebody my own age. Hello CityWhat a Good BoyBrian WilsonIf I Had $1,000,000…each of these songs meant something to me.

Useless trivia fact: I first grew a goatee because I wanted to look more like Steven Page after watching this video.

4. Dookie – Green Day

I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve listened to this record. Again, this was a band whose record spoke to me…and again, it was primarily because we were the same age and the songs grabbed my attention like a slap in the face.

I had heard a few songs from their previous record, Kerplunk, while in university and was immediately intrigued. It wasn’t until I heard the first few power chords of Basket Case, however, that I really felt that I needed to pay attention to this band.

I went to a shrink
To analyze my dreams
She says it’s lack of sex
That’s bringing me down
I went to a whore
He said my life’s a bore
So quit my whining cause
It’s bringing her down

Maybe I didn’t know how depressed I actually was at the time, but at a time when bands like Nirvana was making depression “hip”, Green Day made things real in a very fun, cool-sounding way (isn’t that what punk music is supposed to be about?). Songs like Basket Case, When I Come Around, She (my personal favorite), and Longview all made me believe in rock music again.

5. Reckless – Bryan Adams

Okay…to some of you this might be a bigger surprise than the Barenaked Ladies choice. But to me, Bryan Adams epitomizes everything that is great about rock’n'roll.

One man…a t-shirt…jeans…a guitar…melody…a catchy hook…a chorus you can sing to…a beat.

Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

Bryan Adams has yet to release a bad record. And much like Waking Up The Neighbours (a very close second pick to Reckless), this record was awesome from the first song to the last.

Run To You, Heaven, Summer of ’69, Kids Wanna Rock, Somebody…I can’t just pick out one fantastic song as my favorite.

I don’t care what anybody says…this album rocked my teenage years.

What about you? What albums shaped your life growing up?

Now That We’ve Found Love

The world of celebrity is full of crazy nonsense at the moment and only proves that the internet is a wild and wonderful place.  But after writing this post, I think it’s obvious I need to get out more…

1. Dang it…I hate being at the age where artists I’ve enjoyed over the years end up passing away. It really sucks. Heavy D was only 44 years old and planning a new album and a comeback, so it’s very disheartening to learn of his passing.  I’d be remiss if I didn’t post my favorite song of his (and one of my all-time favorite hip-hop songs)…

2. Somebody tell me why Kim Kardashian (or ANY of the Kardashians) are popular beyond belief?  I mean, she is only known to anybody because she made a sex tape with a rapper (who was actually more popular than her at the time)…and now TMZ is following her every frickin’ breath because she wants out of her sham-only-for-money-and-publicity wedding? I just don’t get it. If she wasn’t so slutty, nobody would know who she was right now (or Paris Hilton, for that matter)…nor would they care.

3. I got quite the kick out of this video. I gotta say…this has never happened to me on a first date.  Or a second.  If fact, I don’t know if I’ve ever come right out and asked for one.  My loss, I’m sure.

4. Justin Bieber’s got his first paternity lawsuit.  Awwwwww…how cute.  I’m actually kind of torn on the whole thing. I mean, he’s taking a DNA test to prove he’s not the father and then plans on suing the accusor “to show there are consequences to making false accusations.” So in that regard, I say good on him for showing the crazies out there that people can’t just make up claims about celebrities in order to get their names in the paper or have a chance of making contact with the celebrity in question.

But on the other hand, if he (as a 16-year-old kid at the time, mind you) actually took this girl (who was 19) into the washroom after his concert and banged her for 30 seconds before dumping her and moving on to the next concert as she claims, then as a dude I just gotta say…

I’m only kidding, people. Relax. Don’t hate me.

5. Conrad Murray found guilty of causing Michael Jackson’s death. Good. Here’s the thing…even if he somehow wasn’t found directly responsible for Jackson’s death, it’s glaringly obvious that everything he was doing for him (i.e. administering anasthetic privately in somebody’s home) was illegal in itself. So I’m just glad that they found him guilty of something because the guy has to pay for robbing the world of the greatest musical talent of my generation.

6. Sure…the video isn’t always in sync and there are probably better videos out there, but the fact that this was done in (almost) one take over the course of only one hour is quite impressive. Seriously…try watching this and NOT smiling at least once.

7. I take that back. Try watching THIS and not smiling at least once.

Nothing at all.
