Confessions from a Cubicle: 10-09-09

Confessions from a CubicleSometimes I drift off at work a bit. It’s not like I actually fall asleep or anything…I just let my mind wander. Lately I’ve been crazy busy, but yesterday morning I was stuck in a meeting. ALL morning. So what I’ve done before is just jot something down and then finish the thoughts once I’m home. For whatever reason, people seem to enjoy my random take on the world…

  • 8:31am – I’m already dreading the day. I’ve been here for almost an hour and I’m already exhausted.
  • 8:42am – I really need to watch what I say on the phone. I need to be more specific about my thoughts and feelings…or else what I say can be misinterpreted. It’s all a learning experience and all but still…
  • 9:11am – OMG…why isn’t it break-time yet?
  • monsters-vs-aliens9:21am – I’ve now seen Monsters vs Aliens three times with Ankle Biter. It’s quite the awesome movie, actually. The characters are original and fun, the voices are extremely well-acted, and the storyline makes for some campy greatness. It’s definitely one to look at buying for Christmas.
  • 9:54am – Break has finally come (#thatswhatshesaid). At least I’m awake now. Well…for now, anyway.
  • 10:11am – Jon Gosselin is a complete and utter tool.
  • 10:12am – David Letterman might be creepy, but he has handled himself a LOT better.
  • 10:13am – I don’t know if I could ever really continue a relationship if I was cheated on.
  • 10:20am – Wait a second…Marge Simpson will actually be “posing” in Playboy?  Is that how desperate the magazine has gotten?  Wow…that’s just silly.  AND it makes me a bit uncomfortable, to be honest.  Eww.
  • Sonic Boom10:27am – I’ve got the new KISS album, “Sonic Boom”, stuck in my head. As I’ve mentioned before on my blog, I’m a HUGE fan and I’ve been waiting impatiently for months for this new album. As icing on the cake, the album is awesome! it’s got some amazing tracks and really is a throwback to older KISS albums. There is a new cd, a greatest-hits cd (re-recorded with the new line-up), and a live concert dvd all for under $14. I know it sounds like I’m shilling this cd…but I honestly think it’s amazing and is the first cd I’ve purchased since 2001.
  • 10:45am – Why is it that the most annoying people are actually the ones who talk the most???
  • 11:02am – I have got a LOT of work to do. It sucks to be stuck in meetings when I could actually be doing something productive.
  • gijoe11:13am – Watched “GI Joe” last night. I gotta say…it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Sometimes, that’s what you gotta do when it comes to movies. You need to lower your expectations so that you end up being pleasantly surprised. And while both Marlon Wayans and the ending were a little bit silly (and really…why would you have a child-like ending when you’ve got adult curses throughout the movie?), overall it was pretty entertaining. If nothing else, it’s pretty much non-stop action.
  • 11:27am – Man…I’m not gonna see Ankle Biter for 10 days. I miss the little guy already.
  • Washington, DC11:40am – Looks like I’ll be doing some sight-seeing in Washington, DC on Monday afternoon. The initial plan is to visit the Smithsonian Institution…but with so many museums and exhibits, we’ll likely only hit the Natural History Museum. That’s gonna be awesome. And at least from the map I’ve seen, the Washington Monument is within clear view of the Smithsonian and the White House is literally just down the street. Do they even let tourists take pictures of the White House anymore? Either way…I’m very much looking forward to checking out the sights.
  • 12:05pm – Mmmm…free lunch.
  • 12:24pm – Why isn’t it 8pm on Friday yet? I can’t wait to spend the weekend with Sunshine and making up for our last weekend together where we both ended up getting sick. We may not see the light of day…

Loving, offspring, singing, & aging

I honestly don’t know where to begin with this past weekend.

There are a few things I want to talk about…in detail…but I don’t know where to start. I, much like Sunshine, need a day or two to digest things and get my thoughts together.

To say this weekend was another tremendous leap forward in our relationship would be a vast understatement.

  • I’m more in love with her today than I was when I arrived on Thursday.
  • I thought her kids (i.e. “The Offspring) were phenomenal and we developed a very cool relationship.
  • I sang my throat out at the KISS concert.
  • I realized on Sunday just how old I am after that concert.  Yikes.

I guess I’ll just have to attempt to summarize the weekend the best way I know how…through photos:

Random thoughts: 07-08-09

Busy busy busy.  Too busy for a “normal” blog post.  But I do have some thoughts on stuff, however…

~~~~~~~~~~
Did you know that at 4:56am this morning, that the official date was: 4:56, 7-8-9?
~~~~~~~~~~

We should acknowledge differences…we should greet differences…until differences make no difference anymore.

~~~~~~~~~~
Regardless of what anybody thinks of Michael Jackson…and at this point, even his hardcore fans must be beginning to tire of the coverage…I think what everybody needs to remember going forward is that he, apparently, was a great single dad whose kids loved him very much.  That, I’m afraid, is getting lost in all the hooplah.
“Ever since I was born, daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine.  And I just wanted to say I love him so much.”
– Paris Jackson, 07-08-09
Really…who are we to tell her otherwise?
~~~~~~~~~~

Is it wrong that I don’t want to change the sheets on my bed because they still smell like Sunshine?  I know I’ll see her in eight days, but I miss her tremendously.

~~~~~~~~~~
If you get a chance and you have a few minutes to spare, I highly suggest visiting Depot Dad.  He’s doing video-blogs right now, telling stories about his life.  It’s truly a great thing for his kids to watch as they grow older.  These stories bring a smile to my face each and every time.  I’m sure they’ll do the same for you.
Here’s an example:
~~~~~~~~~~

I dunno just how bad the driving can possibly be over in New Zealand, but if I saw this bleeding billboard in the blinding rain, I’d probably be so freaked out that I’d get into an accident myself!

This is just creepy…

~~~~~~~~~~
It’s bloody well difficult to lose weight when you’re addicted to Whoppers.  Dang-it…I thought I had gotten over this addiction when I was a teenager.
Heh...they're "balls"
Heh...they're "milk balls"
~~~~~~~~~~

Poor Sunshine is actually getting some flack from people because she only thought Raiders of the Lost Ark was an “okay” movie.  She even had a friend on Facebook question (jokingly, of course) whether or not she could be friends with someone who only thought that movie was “okay”.

She told me that last night.  It made me laugh.

Heh.

OMG…I’m seeing KISS in just over a week!!

My Top 5 – Albums That Shaped My Life

I recently participated in a “Build A Better Blog” challenge that provided 31 ideas in 31 days on how to improve my blog.

One of the suggestions it made was to build a “list post”.  I like lists.  I enjoy lists.  I felt like I could accomplish this task with relative ease.

Then this Facebook application seemingly began to stream non-stop on my home page, where all of my friends would provide ‘Top 5′ lists on their favorite…well…EVERYTHING.

So, because I’ve got the Ankle Biter this weekend (and because I can be inherently lazy), I’ve decided to add on to last month’s list by making this a monthly post idea.

Something I’ve mentioned on occassion is that I used to be a DJ.  I worked in local clubs for about 8 years while in my 20′s.  In fact, I originally left high school wanting to be a radio DJ…but it just wasn’t meant to be.

Having said that, after my children…music IS my life.

So having said that, here is list #2:

The 5 albums that shaped my life:

Double Platinum - KISS1. Double Platinum – KISS

I may have mentioned once or twice before that I am a long-time KISS fan.  In fact, I went into great detail at one point explaining just how and why I became a fan.  Needless to say, this album was the first one I ever owned and it completely changed my life.  And it’s never been about the make-up, either…because at the time I didn’t even know they wore make-up.  I was just a six-year-old kid fascinated by this incredible music that I was hearing.

From Strutter to Firehouse to Cold Gin to Rock’n'Roll All Nite…this record is absolutely my all-time favorite and didn’t only make me a KISS fan, but it made me a music fan.

Def_Leppard_-_Hysteria2. Hysteria – Def Leppard

Yes…I got caught up in the hysteria of this album when it released back in ’87.  I thought there was a blueprint to how a hard rock record should sound.  This, however, broke all stereotypes.  Never had the “pop-rock-metal” fusion sounded so good.  And it wasn’t just one a few songs, but the entire frickin’ album was great.

This album is one of those “never be able to top again” types but I’ll tell ya…it doesn’t get much better than Animal, Armageddon It, or the incredibly catchy Pour Some Sugar On Me.

barenaked ladies - gordon3. Gordon – Barenaked Ladies

Okay…you may be asking yourself, “What?  Really?”  But for me, no other album spoke to me as a university student like this record.

Some people claim that they were a fan of a band from the very beginning.  Well, in storage I’ve still got the independently released cassette that they sold before they got a record deal.  So yeah…I’ve been a fan of this band since the very beginning.

This album spoke to me because it was catchy…it was fun…and the songs were written from the perspective of somebody my own age.  EnidHello CityWhat a Good BoyBrian WilsonIf I Had $1,000,000…each of these songs meant something to me.

Useless trivia fact: I first grew a goatee because I wanted to look more like Steven Page after watching this video.

Green Day - Dookie4. Dookie – Green Day

I can’t even begin to tell you  how many times I’ve listened to this record.  Again, this was a band whose record spoke to me…and again, it was primarily because we were the same age and the songs grabbed my attention like a slap in the face.

I had heard a few songs from their previous record, Kerplunk, while in university and was immediately intrigued.  It wasn’t until I heard the first few power chords of Basket Case, however, that I really felt that I needed to pay attention to this band.

I went to a shrink
To analyze my dreams
She says it’s lack of sex
That’s bringing me down
I went to a whore
He said my life’s a bore
So quit my whining cause
It’s bringing her down

Maybe I didn’t know how depressed I actually was at the time, but at a time when bands like Nirvana was making depression “hip”, Green Day made things real in a very fun, cool-sounding way (isn’t that what punk music is supposed to be about?).  Songs like Basket Case, When I Come Around, She (my personal favorite), and Longview all made me believe in rock music again.

Bryan_Adams_-_Reckless5. Reckless – Bryan Adams

Okay…to some of you this might be a bigger surprise than the Barenaked Ladies choice.  But to me, Bryan Adams epitomizes everything that is great about rock’n'roll.

One man…a t-shirt…jeans…a guitar…melody…a catchy hook…a chorus you can sing to…a beat.

Rinse.  Lather.  Repeat.

Bryan Adams has yet to release a bad record.  And much like Waking Up The Neighbours, this record was awesome from the first song to the last.

Run To You, Heaven, Summer of ’69, Kids Wanna Rock, SomebodyShe’s Only Happy When She’s Dancing…I can’t just pick out one fantastic song as my favorite.

I don’t care what anybody says…this album rocked my teenage years.

What about you?  What albums shaped your life growing up?

My summer of music…alone.

Well…it’s going to be a dream summer of music for me in 2009.  There are more concerts that I really want to see going on in my area than ever before.

Let me just set this up: I live in a city of 100,000 people.  Not very big…but not overly small, either.  We don’t get too many concerts.  In the Maritimes (which is made up of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island) the total population is roughly 1.8 million people.  Not too shabby, I suppose…but that’s three provinces, not cities.  So needless to say, we don’t get huge concerts very often.

So this year’s announcements are really surprising.  Not only are they surprising, but they’re exciting because there are a LOT of bands that I want to see.

The sh*tty thing?  I’m going to each one alone.

BAH!!  Whatever.  I’m an adult.  I just need to suck-it-up.  I mean, who’s to say that I won’t meet somebody between now and then?  Right?  AMIRIGHT people???

Anyhoo…here’s what’s coming up:

  • F*CKING KISS!!!KISSI’ve already gone off about just how excited I am about this particular concert.  Without re-telling my entire post all over again, let me just say that this particular band is my all-time favorite.  I grew up with them.  Their music speaks to me.  I don’t think I can ever tire of my favorites.  So without even caring about who is opening up for the band I went out and bought two tickets to the show.
Wait...I've got TWO tickets??

Wait...I've got TWO tickets??

  • Yeah…two tickets.  See, I was originally going to go with my girlfriend at the time.  Unfortunately, things didn’t quite work out so that means I’ve got two tickets burning a hole in my pocket.  Ahhh well.  This is KISS.  I’m going regardless.  I don’t care where I park…I don’t care if I’m there by myself…I don’t care if it takes 10 hours to get home…I don’t care if I can’t sell off the other one of my $100 tickets.  I absolutely NEED to see this band.
  • AC f*ckin' DC!!The second concert that was announced a few weeks ago was the incredible AC/DC.  Now, right after KISS there is only one band in the world that is on my “concert I need to see before I die” list…and that band is AC/DC.  I can’t tell you the pure joy that their music brings me.  I’m a head-banger at heart…which is a little odd since I never had long hair (except that mullet phase I went through in the early 90′s…but thankfully there’s NO photographic evidence of that), and it doesn’t get much more “head-banger-esque” than AC/DC.  I know all of their songs…I know all of their lyrics (well…most of them)…and much like KISS songs, I can listen to my favorite DC songs and never, ever tire of them.  This is another $100 out of my pocket without knowing who the opening act(s) are, but it’s money I feel I simply have to spend.
  • Bon frickin' Jovi!!The third concert for the area that was just announced yesterday is another of my all-time favorite bands, Bon Jovi.  Sweet merciful crap, people.  This is yet another band that I grew up with.  I listen to Living on a Prayer at least once a week on my iTunes.  I can rattle off twenty of their songs right now from the top of my head.  But y’know what?  This is another $100 ticket…and I don’t know if it’s really worth it.  I love the band, but I don’t know if I love them that much, especially knowing the other two concerts that are already receiving my money.  On top of it all, I’m not keen on their opening acts…at all.  So yeah…this one may have to be put on the backburner.

You would think that these concerts would be more than enough…but they’re not.  This is only HALF of my concert wish list (why isn’t Santa around in the summer??).

  • Disturbed!!Disturbed is playing in a couple of weeks.  I’ll admit, I wasn’t a tremendous fan of this band when they first came on the scene.  And then I remember watching Dawn of the Dead in theatres and sitting through the end credits (I was told to pay attention to the very end).  My heart was already racing from the movie itself and the killer ending, but was just getting more and more pumped by listening to Down With The Sickness.  Soon after I was amazed by all of the great songs they had, with Prayer topping the list.  Not only that, but they had some kick-ass covers of classic 80′s songs like Shout and Land of Confusion.  I think the concert is sold out or close to it…but it doesn’t really matter because I’ve got my son that night and he’s my top priority.
  • Live & the Black frickin' CrowesWhat’s next?  How about a couple of bands who ROCKED the 90′s combining for a 2-night rock show!?!  Live and The Black Crowes are playing back-to-back shows next month.  I’ve never been the biggest fan of both, but I’d dare say their debut albums were both absolutely awesome.   And really, what rock song wouldn’t love to see this and/or this live??  At $45 per show or $70 for both, it’s not a bad deal for a 90-minute drive.
  • Jeez…I’m not even done YET.  There’s the big Chickenfoot concert.

Wait…who in the blue f*ck is CHICKENFOOT??

  • Chickenfoot??Chickenfoot is a new rock “supergroup” that features Sammy Hagar (of solo & Van Halen fame), Michael Anthony (from Van Halen), Joe Satriani (rock guitar god), & Chad Smith (drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers).  I’ve only heard one song of theirs so far and it’s alright, but I find it hard to believe that these guys are frickin’ headlining a show?!?!  I know they’re a “supergroup”, but there best be a TON of Van Halen tunes in order to make this worth anything at all.  Luckily, this concert also has the best all-around line-up of any concert this summer: Our Lady Peace (Canadian rock group extraordinaire), Finger 11 (another great Canuck band), & Sloan (yep…another great Hoser rock band).  At an early-bird price of $65 and a regular admission price of $75, this may also be the best “bang for your buck” concert.  I’m still TOTALLY up in the air on this one, though.  Just don’t know if it’s worth the 6-hour round trip.
  • Last one...Okay…last one (if you exclude the John Fogerty concert next week or the country music festival later in the summer).  This one is a festival that lasts quite a few days, from June 27th thru July 4th.  I’ll be honest…if this was one big concert, I still wouldn’t be 100% convinced to go (although Daughtry would be pretty decent, I think).  Having them as separate concerts gets one giant “meh” from me.  Having said that, there are a couple of pretty good bands.  I mean, Simple Plan has a couple of hits, right?  And then you’ve got Nickelback wannabes Theory of a Deadman (who are getting lots of airplay this way because of this song).  Ummm…then there’s Marianas Trench?  Yeah…I think I’ll pass on this one.

Whew!!  Got all that??

Needless to say, this has got to be one of the busiest summers ever for my little neck of the woods.  And while I would absolutely LOVE to be seeing it all with the love of my life, that’s just not in the cards for me this year.

That’s alright…I’ve got my blogger peeps to keep me company.
