Sex or the Super Bowl?

I’m really happy to announce that as of this week I’m going to be a regular contributor to Parent Society. And as of yesterday, my first post with them is up and can be found here:

My Fantasy Football Team: Week 15

The dream is over for yet another season.

I came close,  but the Broncos v Patriots game ended up ruining my visions of a fantasy football championship for yet another year.

Y’see, Brady ended up doing what he’s been doing all season…throw for touchdowns and yardage and get me over 20 points in a game (he got 27, actually). The problem is that his number one target all season long, tight end Rob Gronkowski, broke the record for touchdowns in a season last weekend and I assume they just wanted to spread around the love a bit more.

So tight end #2 for the Patriots, Aaron Hernandez, ended up getting over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown on Sunday…where Gronkowski only ended up with 53 yards.

I guess none of this would have been so horrible if my opponent hadn’t started Hernandez for his own team.

BAH!!

And to add insult to injury, Willis McGahee ended up injuring his hamstring and only ended up with 70 yards.

Put all of that together, and you have me losing in the semi-finals.

So while I had high hopes at the beginning of the season, it all boiled down to one game. Oh well…I guess I have the chance to finish third with a “consolation” match next weekend.  Still…I’m going to hear it from my boss at work, who was the team I lost to.

Here’s to next season…

My Fantasy Football Team: Week 13

Since I haven’t really been myself lately, I almost forgot to discuss one of the guilty pleasures that gives me (usually) a bit of joy each and every week…fantasy football!!

And really, I should have been stoked to brag about my winning weekend because it not only guaranteed me a spot in the playoffs, but also got me a first round bye!

Okay…admittedly, my division was HORRIBLE…but to still end up first in my division with the second most points overall made me a happy little camper.

I really was happy with the performance of Brady, not so much for his overall numbers but for his constantly finding Gronkowski in the end zone. I mean, 24 points for a tight end?? I really think this guy is close to breaking some tight end records this year. He’s been absolutely phenomenal this season and has definitely been my top “sleeper pick” of the year.

And thankfully my running backs totally bailed-out my wide receivers, who turned in a MISERABLE performance (seriously Gaffney…no points at all???). In addition, another great performance from David Akers just helped me enough to get me one more win.

And as I said, the win ended up getting me a first round bye…

So now I have to look ahead to next weekend. I’m scheduled to play either the Head Hunters or the Greasy Wheels. I’m not overly concerned about either team, to be honest…so I think I’m in pretty good shape. The big thing for me will be match-ups.

Brady and Gronkowski face off against the Denver Broncos. While their defense has been pretty solid over the past six or seven weeks, it hasn’t been stellar and I think the two Pats might give me some points.

Hillis goes up against Arizona, McGahee goes up against New England, Ahmad Bradshaw against Washington, and Sproles goes up against Minnesota…so I’m pretty confident that my three running backs will get me some pretty decent points as long as they stay healthy.

My HUGE question marks come from my receivers. I’ve got Jabar Gaffney taking on the Giants, Laurent Robinson and Miles Austin vs Tampa Bay, and Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson taking on the Jets.  Wait…how in the blue hell did I end up with four receivers from two teams?

I could pick up Johnny Knox (who takes on Seattle) or Damian Williams (who takes on Indianapolis) as they are two awesome match-ups…but I don’t know if they would be better than the stars I’ve already got.

Ugh.

Either way, I think I’ve got a shot at getting into the finals. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Movember, Fantasy Football, & Snowblowers

As the month is coming to an end, I couldn’t be happier to be getting rid of this moustache.

Seriously…with the exception of one $20 donation from a friend on Saturday, I’ve had only grief from Movember.  Sure, it’s been fun…but I look ridiculous. Even more than that, Sunshine thinks it’s horrendous.

I can’t tell you just how emasculating it is to be in the throes of passion and have your significant other burst out laughing in your face because she can only picture you wearing a sombrero.

NOT good.

So needless to say, I’ll be back to my “normal” CBG look sooner rather than later.

*****

With one more weekend left before the playoffs start, I really needed a victory this past weekend in order to stay up front in my division.

Thankfully, that victory came and I’m back to being 6-6 and first in my (admittedly weak) division:

Tom Brady came through (thankfully) and I got another outstanding performance from Dallas receiver Laurent Robinson, who has been a fantastic pick-up in the absence of Miles Austin.

With the standings the way they are, I need next weekend to be a victory to not only solidify my playoff spot, but to also get a first round bye in the playoffs.

I’ve got some really favourable match-ups, too:

  • Both Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski face the hapless Colts (who should really just lay down in this game…if for no other reason than to give me a ton of points).
  • Dallas faces an anemic Arizona secondary, so I think Robinson will have another solid outing.
  • Willis McGahee will be running against Minnesota, who have given up the 11th most points to running backs this season.

My only question marks are with the possibility of injured players returning:

  • Peyton Hillis appears to be back after this past weekend but faces a really tough Baltimore run defense.
  • Jeremy Maclin might be ready against the Seahawks, but it’s not looking good.
  • Miles Austin might be ready for the Cards, but that’s not looking too good, either.
  • Ahmad Bradshaw might be ready for the Packers, but even if he is the Pack have a strong front line so it may not be a great play.

So with Jabar Gaffney playing against a solid Jets secondary, I need to either find another receiver or hope that the rest of my team comes out to play.

TOO MANY VARIABLES!!

*****

A good friend of mine (he actually was the MC at my wedding reception) recently put a snowblower on Kijiji, which is kind of the Canadian equivalent to Craigslist only without the creepy adult ads.

Anyway, so my friend is a very creative guy. He likes to write as a hobby and has a sense of humour that I’ve always enjoyed, but not everybody “gets”.

Last week he wanted to sell his snowblower on Kijiji, so he wrote a pretty creative ad hoping to stick out from the rest of the ads and grab somebody’s attention.

At last viewing, he was up to over 400,000 views.  Yes…almost half a million views (the record for any one Kijiji ad is 500,000 so he’s definitely got that within reach).

As of yesterday, he had:

  • multiple radio interviews
  • multiple newspaper and web interviews/stories
  • a few television interviews (!!)
  • over 50,000 re-links to the ad on Facebook

In addition, he had over 1,400 emails (!!) that included:

  • job offers
  • requests for dates
  • requests to teach people to write ads
  • marriage proposals (!!!)
  • some speculation as to whether he was running some kind of scam
  • and buried deep, deep down, even a few actual offers to buy the snowblower

So as yesterday came to a close, he had finally sold the snowblower. After discussions with Kijiji, they have allowed the ad to remain up due to the heavy traffic. It’s been an unbelievable one-week viral whirlwind.

This is the type of story that you couldn’t hope to create if you really tried. That’s what makes viral so fun most of the time; normal people doing abnormal things that make the rest of the world interested.

Believe me…I would LOVE to be able to write something like that and get that type of response. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been highlighted three times as Freshly Pressed on WordPress.com, and that has been great for readership.  But 400,000 views and 1,400 responses??? I can only imagine the web-traffic that could generate going forward.

Want to read what the hype is all about?  Please…click on the picture below to enlarge it, sit back and relax, then soak in the fun ramblings of a creative writer who simply wanted to sell his snowblower.

I feel like I’m part of a Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon situation, only I’m only one degree away from a Canadian internet celebrity!!

My Fantasy Football Team: Week Ten

I was REALLY torn up about this weekend’s results.  I mean, on one hand I won the fantasy match-up and got my team back up to .500 which, crazy enough, puts me at 2nd place overall in my pool (I’m first in a division of under-performers…the other division has a lot better teams).

However, my fantasy team performed well at the expense of my favorite NFL team, the Jets.  Y’see, I had a feeling that my Jets were going to struggle against the Pats so I benched their defense in favour of Detroit…who also had a brutal game but at least got me 3 more points than the Jets would have.  And in beating the Jets, Tom Brady FINALLY broke out of his slump and threw like crazy. To make things better, he threw like crazy to my favorite TE and his, Rob Gronkowski.

What would have been a HORRIFIC fantasy weekend turned out okay thanks to the 48 combined points of those two individuals. Because honestly…my team COMPLETELY under-performed. It was scary, actually.

So here I stand at 5-5 with Week 11 on the horizon. Maclin’s hurt, Austin’s hurt, and Hillis is hurt. Better still, both Brown and Sproles are on a bye week.

Needless to say, next weekend is NOT looking promising.
