Fun Music Friday

I’m needing a boost today. I need some music to lift my spirits up. Let’s see what I can find…

Ahhh…nothing brings a smile to my face faster than a cover tune by my favorite Canadian band, Walk Off The Earth. This one-take video is awesome.

I never wanted to like this song. I certainly never wanted to love it. But somehow, this little ditty about plastic drinking cups has turned me into one of the sheep. Oh well…I’ll just have to sing along, I guess.

This was a highlight of last weekend’s Bryan Adams concert for me. The crowd had been enjoying his show up until this song, but then for some reason he got everybody up for this one. Imagine this…almost ten thousand people all jumping up and down at the same time (not just dancing, but jumping) and clapping their hands in unison. I was blown away and every time I hear this song now, a smile comes to my face remembering that moment.

It’s Eddy Grant, people! Is that not enough for you?  How about Eddy Grant LIVE playing on some weird French television show with male dancers and people all dressed up?  Yeah…that’s fun for today.

And finally, you simply can’t go wrong with this classic from The Boss…

There…I’m feeling better already. Have a great weekend, everybody!

RIP Dick Clark

I was going to finally complete my thoughts on the cruise that Sunshine and I were on last month, but last night I was hit with some sad news. One of the musical icons that I grew up with, Dick Clark, passed away at the age of 82.

I say “musical icon” because I’m one of the people who actually remember growing up to American Bandstand and watching Dick Clark on my television every single Saturday afternoon.

Now mind you, I never really got to know him until the early 80′s…but man that was a VERY influential time for me. I don’t think any artist was truly BIG unless they were on American Bandstand.

It’s funny…there are always two performances that have always stuck out for me: one by Slade and one by Wang Chung. And wouldn’t you know it, I was able to find BOTH on YouTube!

The Wang Chung “performance” always stayed with me because they didn’t even attempt to make it appear they were performing live, like most of the other acts did on the show. No…they were 100% proud to be lip-syncing as they didn’t have any microphones. Years before Milli Vanilli would be vilified for doing the same thing, here is that very performance (with Dick doing a great job trying to get a good interview going with the band beforehand):

The Slade performance has always stood out to me as my all-time favorite. I remember (vividly, for some reason) staying up late the night before to watch Friday Night Videos and seeing “Run Runaway” for the first time. I was absolutely blown away. Then the very next afternoon, here was the same band jumping around and playing this incredible rock song that to this day is on my iPod “driving around the city” playlist. I’m so happy to have been able to find this American Bandstand performance (with Dick doing another great job interviewing in between songs):

Dick Clark will go down in history as one of the most important and influential men in the entertainment business over the course of the past 50 years. Remember the $20,000 Pyramid? Or better yet, can you imagine December 31st without a Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve? And no offense to Ryan Seacrest, but no amount of star power will ever take away from Dick Clark’s ability to host a show and make everybody feel welcome.

So goodbye, Mr. Clark. You will always be remembered for your amazing contributions. Rest in peace and enjoy the music wherever you are.

"It's got a good beat and you can dance to it."

Oh Look…It’s Bryan Adams!

I know a lot of you are waiting to read the conclusion to my vacation with Sunshine, but this past weekend I got the greatest surprise from the love of my life.

Y’see, a few months ago they announced that Bryan Adams was performing in his first full-scale rock concert tour of Canada in about 20 years. I know I’ve gone on about my love of KISS and how their music helped shape my life, but Bryan Adams is definitely a Top 5 all-time favorite performer (and is also on that list of albums).

I was fortunate enough to have seen him in concert 20 years ago, actually. It was a big-time concert by the beach with Sloan, Sass Jordan, Extreme, the Steve Miller Band, and then Adams as the headliner. It was during his Waking Up The Neighbors tour and I knew every word of every song of his set.

I never thought I’d be able to enjoy his music live and in person again.

With the possibility of going on a cruise coming so last minute, the possibility of us seeing Bryan Adams was next to zero. In fact, with Sunshine not being his biggest fan (she likes him and all, but isn’t a huge fan like I am), I had put the whole thought of seeing him in concert to bed…never to be thought of again.

Well…imagine my surprise to have been given this on Friday afternoon:

That’s right. My unbelievable, incredibly awesome new fiance bought two tickets to see Bryan Adams as a surprise gift for me!!

Because the concert was last night and was about five empty seats away from a sell-out, the fact she could even get tickets was surprising. The seats were about as far away from the stage as you could get (she said that she would have gotten better seats if they were available), but I didn’t care. The show was absolutely amazing and I couldn’t be happier to be engaged to the most thoughtful, amazing woman in the world.

So to kick-start the week, here are some of the songs that Adams performed last night. He’s still got an amazing voice and, quite frankly, probably sounds better now than he did twenty years ago!

Enjoy!!

Vacation Edibles: The Food Of The Carnival Legend

Ahhhh food.

One of the big concerns cruisers have going into any week-long journey is whether or not the food will live up to expectations. With over two thousand people to feed on a daily basis, you’re going to get more than your fair share of positive and negative reviews.  Well…I’m going to try to do my best to give my opinions without going too far one way or the other.

At the end of the day, Sunshine and I thought the food on the Carnival Legend was “Good” to “Very Good” with some “Meh” thrown in from time to time. It wasn’t spectacular, but it was far from being awful.

In fact, there was only one meal where we walked away thinking, “That really wasn’t very good.” I figure if that’s the only time we did that over the course of a seven-day cruise, then we’re in pretty good shape.

MAIN DINING ROOM:

Without going through every single menu in detail, let me just say that the service 6 days out of 7 was very good and so was the food. There were only a couple of dishes that really “rocked my socks”, but the big thing to keep in mind is that I’m not paying top dollar to sail on a billion-star cruiseline. I’m paying a decent price for decent food, and I firmly believe that I got what I paid for. I don’t really have any complaints about the food in general.

FAVORITES:

Obviously, the chocolate melting cake is tops on my list. Carnival is known for the delicious dessert and there’s very good reason for that. I’ve seen pictures from some reviewers who dumped it onto their plate and then proceed to make fun of it, but that just seems dumb to me. Who cares what it looks like? It’s chocolate…it’s melting…it’s cake…it’s awesome!!

As somebody who lives in an area with (arguably) the best lobster in the world, I have to admit that I was REALLY impressed with the broiled Maine lobster tail and jumbo black tiger shrimp. Of course, I also had that on the evening of my engagement, so I might be a tad bit biased for the entire menu on that particular evening…especially where I had inhaled my meal before thinking about taking a picture.

On the last night of the cruise, I saw frog legs on the menu. When the dish arrived at the table, some of the looks I got from other people that were dining around me made for an uncomfortable moment. Having said that, the legs themselves were quite tasty. They really do taste like tiny chicken drumsticks. Just forget the fact that you’re eating a frog. Y’know…IF you can do that.

I’m lucky that I didn’t know about the vanilla milkshakes on board the Legend until there were three days left on the cruise because my Sail-n-Sign card would have been a LOT more expensive otherwise. Y’see, I’m not a coffee drinker and I was really trying to behave myself from a food point-of-view so snacks were out of the question. That meant that I didn’t go to the Coffee Bar very often…or at all…during the cruise. While waiting around for something (I don’t recall now), I happened to see that the Coffee Bar didn’t only service ice cream along with their other decadent treats, but they also served milkshakes. For $4, I was treated to a spectacular home-made milkshake made with French Vanilla ice cream and whipped cream on top. I immediately fell in love and had one the next two days (including the morning of our departure!).

Some of the other treats found at the Coffee Bar looked REALLY good, too…

SKIP THIS NEXT TIME:

Spicy alligator fritters. Trust me…these are little balls of mush in the guise of alligator meat. I mean, you really would have NO idea that you were even eating alligator if you weren’t called. I was disappointed primarily because I wanted to eat some alligator (I’ve only had it once before) and this, kids, wasn’t much of a sampler.

Shark and langoustino fire cracker roll. Ummm…see above about the alligator. Seriously…these looked exactly like the “alligator” and could have been them for all I knew.

Chicken breast on fettuccine noodles in a mushroom sauce.  Giant “meh” from me on this one. I just felt the dish was flavorless and bland. It looked nice, though…

LIDO DECK:

The buffets offered more than enough choices for me to pick from. On the Legend, there was a pizzeria, an oriental-style buffet, an Italian-style buffet, a salad bar, a sandwich/sub bar, and a burger/hot dog bar in addition to the buffet that changed from day to day. There was also a large dessert bar, but I didn’t visit there too often.

I was a little hesitant to try the pizzeria because I wasn’t sure if I’d like their pizza (I’m a pizza fanatic and it’s my favorite food). The styles of pizza were a bit odd, as well:

But there were a couple of days where I had a slice of pizza and a Caesar salad (made fresh in front of you) and it really wasn’t too bad at all. It wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but I’ve had a LOT worse pizza in my lifetime.

The burgers were good, too. Again, not great…but good. For a quick lunch to enjoy on the openness of Lido Deck, a nice burger and/or a salad is a great option.

The Italian food was normally decent, but not quite my cup of tea so I only tried it once or twice.

The oriental food wasn’t too shabby, either. In fact, out of all of the buffets on Lido Deck, the oriental food section was my favorite:

So again, at the end of the day, I don’t have any big complaints about the food on the Carnival Legend. To me, I got exactly what I paid for, and that’s not a knock on anything, that’s simply the reality of the situation.

My advice? Don’t go into a Carnival cruise with very high expectations because those aren’t fair to either yourself or to Carnival. I’m not saying to lower expectations, but just keep them reasonable. If you do that, you shouldn’t be disappointed in the overall product.

My other advice? DRINK THE CHAMPAGNE!!!

Vacation Videos: Know Us…Love Us!

After posting a couple of videos from this past week, I received some comments about how both Sunshine and I seem to let our personalities come out a bit and that it’s nice to see, considering that we’re always “out there” in photographs but never really in videos. And for all of our online blog/Twitter friends, they now feel just a bit closer to us.

So I figured that I’d post a few videos today. None of them are really particularly interesting and there really aren’t very many of them, but they all tell a story…at least to Sunshine and I.

Let’s start off with something simple, though the only person acting “simple” is me. Y’see, this was taken just minutes before the start of the first “game show” on the first night of the cruise. For those keeping score, this was where I won Ship-On-A-Stick number one…

So the premise is simple: music was playing in the background and both Sunshine and I were overly excited to be on a cruise to the Caribbean. I started acting a fool and Sunshine, ever encouraging me to act silly as much as possible, decided it would look great as a video…

Soon after proposing, an inside joke became the fact that we still couldn’t really believe that we were engaged. Honestly? It’s almost a month since I popped the question and I still can’t believe that it actually happened (but in a TOTALLY good way!!). Sometimes one of us would casually mention the fact that we were now “to be married” by saying as a way to bring a smile to the other person’s face. I happened to do this to Sunshine in a way that she found amusing, thus she wanted me to do it again for the camera. I honestly don’t think this is funny to anybody else but us, but what the heck…

Every evening when Sunshine and I would get ready, she’s put hairspray into her hair. No big deal, right? Well, every time she did she’d do the same thing when she finished, which you’ll see in the video. I told her that I’d eventually get it on video, and the final night of the cruise I did. Oh, and for those curious, this guy is David Suzuki

On one of the last nights of the cruise we were up on the Serenity Deck, which is an adults-only section of the ship. It was a calm night, the stars were out, and we seemed to be the only two enjoying the “serenity” of the area (it was around 10:15pm). We just wanted to document how awesome it was to be together in that particular moment…

Of course, it was so calm and beautiful and relaxing on this particular evening, I ended up falling asleep. Honestly, I could have slept the entire night up there. Sunshine, however, thought it would be funny to video me sleeping (i.e. snoring). You’ll notice that she starts off the video by being as quiet as possible so to not wake me up. Then she wakes me gently, I notice the camera, and then continue to fall back asleep. This was, quite frankly, one of my favorite moments on the cruise: just her and I under the stars. And I apologize in advance for the darkness of the video as we certainly don’t have any HD equipment (although we’ll take donations…lol)…

There was another moment, while in Mahogany Bay, where we took a video to simply document how incredibly happy and blessed we felt. We were sitting in a swing facing the Carnival Legend after spending some amazing time on the beach when I decided to whip out the video camera. You’ll notice at the end of the video, somebody recognizes us as the couple that got engaged on the ship (although they thought we were newlyweds…lol) and offer to take our picture. This is the picture they took:

And this is the video the preceded it…

Now comes the majority of our videos in the form of one inside joke.  It started after Sunshine watched an episode of “Live with Kelly” and Martin Short was on as a guest host. He was talking about how he had this “game” that he and his “actor friends” liked to play sometimes: how convincing they could be while saying a particular line. The line in question?

“That’s a good cup of coffee.”

Of course, just saying it to each other wasn’t enough.  No, we needed to document us saying it on video. Repeatedly. This makes Sunshine and I laugh, so these are posted solely for our enjoyment (i.e. don’t say that I didn’t warn you…lol):

Taken on Lido Deck after grabbing a bite to eat:

In Billie’s Piano Bar while enjoying a most delicious milkshake:

All alone near the Atlantis Lounge while Sunshine is off “freshening up”:

On Lido Deck…again:

Sunshine deciding to FINALLY get in on the action:

And that’s about it, kids. Hope you at least got SOME enjoyment out of them. I’ll be back tomorrow to recap our final day at sea…
