Twitter Tales: 04-16-09

Twitter Tales

While not yet 100% sold on all of Twitter’s positives and benefits, I still find myself addicted to it.

The thing that keeps me coming back over and over isn’t the possibility that I could end up with thousands of followers with whom I could start a web-based business with (or whatever the heck it is that those people do).

No, the thing that brings me back multiple times every single day is clicking on links and reading and/or seeing things I’d otherwise never get a chance to read and/or see (not to mention getting some awesome fellow blogger updates).

So once again, it’s time to check out my (semi) weekly Twitter Tales:

  • Ashton Kutcher

    Ashton Kutcher

I’m a little torn…not sure what to start off with first as there are a few different big items this week.  I think, though, one of the more fun things going on in Twitterville is the “war” between Ashton Kutcher and CNN.  Ashton wants to get to a million followers.  CNN almost has a million followers.  Ashton has said that he will prank-doorbell-ring Ted Turner’s house and run away if he gets a million before CNN.  Or something like that.  It’s all about fun at this point and it’s gaining momentum.  In fact, CNN’s own Larry King got involved and gave a little video saying that CNN would “bury” Kutcher.  At last count, CNN was still ahead by about 20,000 followers (give or take).  Not that it really matters…but it’s all in fun, right?  And on top of that, it gives more publicity to the social medium that seems to be taking over the internet (for now, at least).  Here’s the latest video from Ashton as he is now giving away prizes for the millionth follower:

  • Laura Bethea

    Laura Bethea

Big shout-out to Laura for getting me turned on to Ghost Hunters.  I had never really given the show a chance until reading her weekly tweets on its awesomeness (like this one from last night, which just cracked me up).  Now?  Well now I’m hooked.  I absolutely LOVE this show.  I’ve seen every episode from this season and I’ve almost finished watching all of last season.  I guess I’ll work my way back to the beginning.

  • Jon Favreau

    Jon Favreau

For fans of Iron Man, director Jon Favreau (who is an awesome director…see Elf) has been tweeting little bits about his on-set experience directing the sequel to last year’s blockbuster smash.  They just started filming last week and Favreau confirmed that Garry Shandling was going to be in the movie, along with also telling the world just how awesome Mickey Rourke is.  I like that he’s doing this…it’s interesting.  It’s almost like a behind-the-scenes segment for the DVD release…only in 140 characters or less.

  • Tila Tequila

    Tila Tequila

A rather disturbing series of tweets by Tila Tequila took place recently.  And as of this writing, it hadn’t been confirmed whether or not her account was hacked or if she was truly considering a live internet suicide attempt.  It’s a locked Twitter account, so unless you’re accepted as a “follower” you won’t be able to see the post if I link it.  So I took a quick screen capture.  This really is disturbing.  If it’s fake, it totally shows the world that Twitter definitely needs to update its security measures because there’s no need for this.  If it’s real?  Then there’s a whole other batch of issues that need to be addressed for this woman.  Either way…it’s not the best publicity that Twitter would want to see:

  • Depot Dad

    Depot Dad

One of my favorite single dad bloggers, Depot Dad, is starting to go through cancer treatment.  As someone who has seen my family hit by cancer pretty hard (my grandfather passed away, my 34-year old cousin passed away last year, my mom currently has a brain tumor), I’m really hoping that everything turns out well for DD.  He seems like a great guy and bloggers who have met him in person rave about him.  I’m hoping he continues to tweet and blog about this experience…he could really turn into a very loud yet soothing voice for a number of cancer survivors out there who don’t know where to turn to discuss what they’re going through.  Hat’s off to ya, DD!!  Stay strong!!

  • This has to be the funniest link of the week.  I’ll give props where it’s due…and this Funny or Die clip of Lindsay Lohan doing an eHarmony commercial ranks up there as one of the funniest viral clips I’ve ever seen.  Tremendous stuff.
  • Modern Single Momma

    Modern Single Momma

Morgan (aka ModernSingleMomma) recently listed me as one of the “Who’s Who of Single Parents on the Web”.  VERY cool.  She’s actually got a whole week of “link love” going on…so please, by all means, drop by her blog and check it out.  I’m interested to see how the rest of the week goes.  OH…and if you’re like me…you’ll thoroughly enjoy watching her jump on a trampoline for five minutes straight.  Just sayin’.

  • Nicole Vulcan

    Nicole Vulcan

Thanks to ModernSingleMomma’s blog-pimpin’ post, I came across a cool blog by Nicole Vulcan (I must say, she’s got a VERY cool last name…especially to an old dorky nerdy Trekker like myself). Anyway, Nicole happened to tweet about how her daughter recently sang the words to Beck’s “Loser”.  HA!!  I thought that was awesome and can’t wait for my own son to sing-along to songs like that.  Early 90’s alt rock FTW!!

“Just woke up and was told how wonderful it is that my boobs are still perky. Yay for perky boobs with no bra.”

  • And to finish things off this week, I simply have to link-up to the YouTube video that’s being shown around the world.  The video of Susan Boyle.  Don’t know the story?  Well…just know that since the video hit YouTube on Saturday it’s been hit well over 10 million times (9 million on one post, 4 million on another, 1 million on another, etc.).  Heck…I’ve watched it four times today.  It’s truly an amazing story and an even more amazing performance.  Honestly…if you don’t get a tear in your eye or a lump in your throat, then I don’t know what else to tell you.  PLEASE WATCH THIS VIDEO.  You’ll thank me when you’re done.

I about fell OVER when I saw that Susan Boyle video. I’ve never seen that show before, but you can bet the bank that I’ll be keeping tabs on her. :)

    Oh. Hi.

  • MindyMom

Thanks for starting my day with some Ashton! Always a good thing and now I really have no idea what else you blogged about. JK ;)

  • T

I did love the Susan Boyle video. We watched it here at work a few times the other day.

Can’t watch Ghost Hunters.. I get too freaked out being the only adult in the house. Eeek!

The Tila Tequila thing is very disturbing. I guess we’ll see on Saturday, right?

Love your twitter updates! Keep ’em coming!

  • Anonmom

I”m not completely sold on Twitter, either, but I do agree that you get the most fascinating info there!

  • dadshouse

The San Jose Mercury News had a nice interview with Twitter cofounder Biz Stone today. You might find it interesting…

Loving this weekly feature of yours!

Jon Favreau is one of my favourite people in Hollywood, he has a twisted sense of humour. Have you seen the movie Made? Rent it if you haven’t. Favreau and Vince Vaughn are hysterical together.

Too funny to think about a child singing along to Beck’s Loser. I don’t listen to any kids music with my girl, only my kind of music, so I can’t wait for the day that she sings along to an Alice in Chains song ;)

    QT — Hi. :-)

Mindy — I’m definitely feeling the same way about Demi as you do about Ashton.

T — I got freaked out a couple of times watching that show at first in my house at night alone. It gets a bit easier once you realize a lot of the time they’re making something out of nothing. It’s during the “reveal” that I get freaked out the most…hearing voices and such.

Anonmon – Twitter is constantly evolving and changing. I think those who believe they can make money off of it will be disappointed. But those wanting information and entertainment will be the ones thriving.

Dads — Thanks for the link. Definitely an interesting interview.

JM — I’ve definitely seen “Made”. But if you REALLY want to see Favreau and Vaughn at their best? You simply have to see “Swingers”. That movie is MONEY. Heh.

  • Jim Everson (Depot Dad)

Wow! Thanks for the link love. That has to be the nicest introduction I’ve ever had. And thanks for the quick tip on my pathetic Twitter social skills. Now I know who to watch for proper Twitter etiquette.

  • NicoVee

the name is from the family, i swear. some queen of sweden thought it would be a great idea to give my great-great grandfather the name ‘god of fire.” i keep wondering what sort of deeds he did to get that name.. =)
